More sense breaking out.

Wonderful news - and from NZ! Interesting that the TW athlete quoted is worried that this will 'force' TW into competing with men. Well yes, they are men - if other men don't like to see men in dresses then that is transphobia and they should be told to BeKind. Simples.

SinnerBoy · 21/12/2023 08:48

Blimey, this is good news indeed. Have they taken a philtre?

GoodOldEmmaNess · 21/12/2023 08:48

Infuriating headline and tone in that article. The usual misrepresentation about transgender people being 'banned' 'separated', 'forced' - rather than simply being required to compete on sex-based categorisations, on the same terms as everyone else.

Redshoeblueshoe · 21/12/2023 08:51

Blimey New Zealand - maybe Posie had a bigger impact than I thought

SinnerBoy · 21/12/2023 08:53

I agree about "forced and banned." It's just that they're no longer permitted to cheat, by larping as women, to the detriment of women and girls.

DrivingonIce · 21/12/2023 08:56

Ensuring sport at the highest level is fair is important but... not as important as transwomen's self validation, according to Kate Weatherly.

And there we have it.

Helleofabore · 21/12/2023 09:05

This is a great start. It will force a lot of discussion again. And it will show that there is still no evidence at all to support male people competing in female sporting categories despite another year passing. And weren’t we told there were studies being released this year that would prove all male physical advantages were negated ?

And when people realise the lies that have been told about sport, they do look further or they at least start to question the other things this group tell us.

Also they have a new right-wing government, Jacinda Ardern would never have done this.

There's never any push to encourage men to be more inclusive of their 'trans siblings' and welcome them no matter how they present. It's only ever women who get told to budge up and stop worrying their pretty little heads about winning.

EasternStandard · 21/12/2023 09:31

Agree with pp it’s likely the new gov changing direction

Boiledbeetle · 21/12/2023 09:44

However, transgender athlete and two-time national champion mountain biker Kate Weatherly fears it will lead to athletes being forced into men’s competitions or sidelined completely.

imagine the audacity of the NZ government to insist men can no longer cheat! They don't have to give up sport at all they can either do something with their friends or go in the men's races/games/teams etc.

My capacity to give a shit about what the poor men are going to do is at zero.

You mean men will be competing against men?

That's crazy talk!

Helleofabore · 21/12/2023 09:49

Of course it is because of the change in government.

I hope that by the time the government changes again though, that this sports issue has been thoroughly investigated and can not be revived.

HagoftheNorth · 21/12/2023 10:01

Well done New Zealand!

Kate Weatherley’s views can probably be summarised as trans woman (pretends to?) fails to understand the differences between men’s bodies and women’s bodies.

teawamutu · 21/12/2023 10:28

So KJK was an evil bigot who needed to be assaulted and run out of the country for... saying exactly this?

I'm startled. Thought NZ was too far gone for common sense.

Yes. This is it. The core.

Females have no business having lives or desires of their own when a male wishes to use them.

teawamutu · 21/12/2023 11:19

The interesting thing is that every single one of the top-rated comments are solidly in favour of protecting women's sports.

Are there any Kiwi MNers that have any info on the NZ Herald's readership demographic? Are they the equivalent of the UK's Guardian, Times? Telegraph?

NotBadConsidering · 21/12/2023 11:20

Kate Weatherly is fully aware of the differences between men’s bodies and women’s bodies, which was why Weatherly was able to use the former to beat the latter.

Wetandhorrible · 21/12/2023 12:09

The NZ government have called for this?!? Have they called themselves actual Nazis yet?!?!? 🙃🙃🙃🙃 There may be hope... even in NZ!!

I've been involved in conversations with males in a sports team who said they were happy to include transwomen in their team - why wouldn't they be, there's no risk to them. So I don't know that non-inclusion from men is actually a problem.
It's the transwomen who only want to play on women's teams.

DrivingonIce · 21/12/2023 14:56

There's at least one transgirl round here on a boys' sports team (not an assumption, the other boys were asked to use the new name and not take the mickey). That's surely how it should be, and anything else is window dressing.

That's really good to hear, thank you for sharing. I feel that women and all sane governing bodies of sports have to hold the line that men's and women's sports are strictly for males or females respectively. Within that, sport should be welcoming to all within the category, of all 'genders' and none.

There isn't the range of news reporting in NZ that there is in the UK. I think the NZ Herald is the only newspaper available nationally, it's certainly the biggest. It was generally thought to have a left-wing bias in reporting (there was a lot of money given to media by the last government). I was pleasantly surprised that practically all of the comments thought this was obvious and sensible. Sport is so important here, it's a really good first thing to tackle.

Yes, I'm sure it's the change in government. One of the minor parties in the coalition had single sex spaces and sports as a campaign point and the leader of the other minor party answered the 'what is a woman?' question without hesitation. Unlike our prime minister at the time who found it a very difficult question.

GourmetLettuceMix · 21/12/2023 20:12

The NZ Herald isn't really a national paper despite its name. It has more of a national reach since being online but it was always a more Auckland-focused paper. People tend to read their regional newspapers, which do of course carry national headlines.

This story was on the 6pm news last night. As is always the case with trans athlete stories, they interviewed poor discriminated Kate Weatherly, who looks and sounds male. They did not speak to any female athletes. I have never seen a female athlete given a voice about this issue.
