Miriam Cates under investigation

Why has Miriam Cates suddenly gone under investigation? The comments in The Times are usually highly supportive of the MPs that speak out against Gender Ideology but they're properly railing against her. What has been her downfall?

Our observations and opinion of her evidently differ.

You haven't outlined what your observations are, though - you are just playing games, it seems to me.

Annasoror · 18/12/2023 15:09

Not a good sign if she's aligning herself with Danny Kruger, who doesn't think that women should have complete autonomy over their bodies.

She's a Christian and as such is not in favour of abortion. That is hardly a recriminating belief, though, even if one is not in agreement.

I'm under no obligation to say how I perceive her. As I said, her activities and views are in the public domain.

So why comment then? this is a discussion board.

I'm perfectly entitled to say that I don't like her expressed views, and I don't like her documented activities either. As I said, perception evidently differs.

She's my MP (though hopefully not for long!). She blocks anyone on Facebook who's comments she disagrees with. I knew this so was scrupulously polite and factual when commenting, but because I wasn't cheering her on I was blocked.

She has been a pretty ineffective MP, and has used her position to line her own pockets. To begin with she loved to be on the local news talking about local issues like steel or the buses. I thought she was a bit self-important, but harmless. In recent times she has become more publicly right-wing. She backed Boris all the way, argued against free school meals, Lied about Cummins and his 'eye test', and pocketed a hefty chunk of 'levelling up' money with her husband. She was also behind an app for Food Banks, but charged them for using it.

I have no idea what she has done to warrant an investigation though, as it'd probably be easier to list those tories that haven't caused ‘significant damage to the reputation of the House’.

RampantIvy · 18/12/2023 16:14

Miriam Cates is my MP (unfortunately). She voted against free meals during half term for children receiving free school meals, she doesn't support the local farmers, she has consistently voted against raising the threshold at which people start to pay income tax, she has consistently voted for increasing the rate of VAT, she voted for restricting the scope of legal aid, she has consistently voted against laws to promote equality and human rights, she has voted against measures to prevent climate change.

It's all here:

She only won her seat because the labour MP decamped elsewhere.

We must live near each other @Gilles27

Floisme · 18/12/2023 16:24

If you don't like your MP or their views then the way to get rid of them is through the ballot box.

That said, if it does turn out to be a breach of lockdown rules then I won't have any sympathy.

RampantIvy · 18/12/2023 17:19

Which is what I have done @Floisme

Floisme · 18/12/2023 17:42

What I'm querying is the idea I'm getting from some posts that not liking your MP or their views should be reason to support their being investigated. A parliamentary investigation should surely be for suspected breach of parliamentary standards and nothing else?

As I've said, if that turns out to be the case - and particularly if she's shown to have broken the lockdown rules that her own government voted through - then, as far as I'm concerned, she'll deserve to be sanctioned, and her voters will no doubt take a dim view of it too.

I just don't see the relevance of whether or not anyone likes her or her views.

RampantIvy · 18/12/2023 17:46

Of course it is irrelevant, but like many threads sometimes the initial post gets derailed and develops into something else. She is a dishonest woman.

RapidOnsetGenderCritic · 18/12/2023 17:54

I expect her voting record closely aligns with the Conservative whip. She may turn out to have feet of clay. Most MPs do. I tend to judge people’s performance as an MP on more than one criterion, as I usually agree with them on one issue and not on another, and none of the parties aligns with my views.

This isn't the Christian board or the Conservative values board. This is the feminism board. If the person who is the topic of this thread is behaving in the manner described, as in aligning with the likes of Danny Kruger, of course this relevant to a discussion on the feminism board about her.

Things in this section were supposed to be analysed through the lens of you know, feminism?

anniegun · 18/12/2023 18:08

She is a nasty piece of work. It could be anything

Floisme · 18/12/2023 18:16

I know I'm banging on about this but the thread was started to discuss her parliamentary investigation and within less than 10 posts it had moved on to her track record as an MP and now to her character and her views on abortion - all up to her constituents as far as I'm concerned.

I'm finding it frustrating because I'm heartily sick of politicians who behave as if laws and rules are for the little people. I don't care which side of the house they're on, it's terrible for democracy and I'd like to see every one of them held to account.

But ok if no-one else is interested then fair enough, I'll wander off back to Style and Beauty.

ResisterRex · 18/12/2023 18:20

Curious from the SDP leader:

To be fair we can't really discuss the investigation because we know literally nothing about it apart from a possible leak in the Mail. The only thing to discuss is whether we're sad or happy that something bad has happened to her, based on our pre-existing feelings about her.

If it is a Covid partying issue then I think it would be a stretch to find a FWR angle.

Floisme · 18/12/2023 18:45

Fair. I'll leave you to it then.

In case you weren't aware, what constitutes 'women's issues' or 'feminism' is not a closed shop, nor a fixed ideology. A lot of women are re-assessing where we've come so far. For some people certain aspects of feminism actually devalue women, devalue the traditional female roles; devalue motherhood - in the pursuit of some 'imgained 'equality' with men. A game in which women can never win.

Intersectionalism 'equality' feminism also has its fair share of responsibility for the notion that men can be women and that women should just shove up and " be kind".

Being conservative in your values does not mean that you don't care about women, women's issues, women's rights, women's dignity or anything else in between.

I'll not be taking lectures on what is or is not permissible to discuss from a women's rights perspective. 'Women's rights' is not just about abortion on demand.

RebelliousCow · 18/12/2023 19:00

I don't particularly like that this board ( sex and gender) has been merged with the 'feminism chat' board. I found so much of the discussion on that board to be flat, predicatble and uninteresting.

Why was the decision made to merge once again? Anyone know?

Froodwithatowel · 18/12/2023 19:06

I can still see two separate boards Rebellious, am I missing something?

I can still see the other board. I think you've answered your own question. I hardly ever look at it now.

IwantToRetire · 18/12/2023 20:07

This was never the "sex and gender" board, it was and still is the Feminism and Women's Rights (FWR) board. When MNHQ gave in to the nice girls who didn't like the gender crical views formed out of a feminist and women's rights perspective, for some reason MNHQ tried to say is should only be about sex and gender. But everyone ignored them and kept on posting about feminism and women's rights, although of course given public events, gender was a frequent theme.

So to save face, instead of just closing "chat" which nobody wanted, MNHQ just started adding more words onto sex and gender, eg chat, intersectionality, and so on. ie it always was and continued to be the FWR board.

Maybe chat should be renamed Conforming Women and not try and pretend it is anything to do with feminism.

And as you can see from the URL for this board it always was and has remained women's rights.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/12/2023 01:24

Maybe chat should be renamed conforming women and not try to pretend it is anything to do with feminism.

Or maybe, just maybe, it gives women who don't feel comfortable discussing women's rights here (with good reason) somewhere else to discuss stuff.

Feminism exists to make women's lives better. Women do not exist for feminism.

AdamRyan · 19/12/2023 09:26

I think given the silence Cates must be under investigation for something very serious, not just "covid partying" or "GC views".
Let's wait and see but I'm with sooty - not a fan. She is no friend of women with her "educate women less so they stay home and have babies"
