Miss France beauty contest: short-haired winner described as woke

Miss France beauty contest. The winner is a stunning 20-year-old, pictured in a swimsuit, who was the only woman in the contest to have short hair in what seems to be a Purdey-style cut. Apparently the French public are outraged about this display of woke inclusivity. Link to an archived Telegraph page.

All the shingled flappers: Mary Quant in the 60s: most of my friends at school in the 70s. All those years of feminism. And now apparently we were all androgynous and our short hair was 'inclusive'.

I know - cannot believe it!
How dare a beautiful woman have short hair! Where is Rapunzel

This archaic contest needs to be cancelled asap

MandyMotherOfBrian · 18/12/2023 08:50

She isn’t androgynous in the least. The world’s going backwards at an alarming rate.

JamSandle · 18/12/2023 08:50

I mean these contests are sexist by nature.

Shes beautiful though.

NotBadConsidering · 18/12/2023 08:52

Did no one in France ever come across Linda Evangelista?! She looks just like her.

She also looks worryingly thin.

LizzieSiddal · 18/12/2023 09:09

Have we been transported back to 1954?

At least this article will get people talking and being allowed to openly state women’s hairstyle is nobody’s business but their own.

plusjamais · 18/12/2023 09:11

Spitting image of Linda Evangelista.

Barmecide · 18/12/2023 09:14

I can’t believe ‘beauty contests’ still happen in 2023.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/12/2023 09:17

Unless there's a "beautiful flowing locks artistry" round that she couldn't participate in why shouldn't she have short hair?

I find the whole concept odd really.

puncheur · 18/12/2023 09:17

The French public aren't 'outraged'. A few people on twitter, which the vast majority of French people don't use and have no interest in, had an opinion. And the Telegraph saw a cheap way to combine it's longterm Francophobia with a nice new twist of 'anti-wokeness' for a crap spacefiller.

notimagain · 18/12/2023 09:17

Trust me they really aren't...

There were a few grumbles in some parts of the French media yesterday (mainly some of the Parisan society/fashion pages) but today's French MSM headlines are mainly about North Korea, immigration, cost of living, another ATC strike and locally further comment on the Alex Batty case.

ArthurbellaScott · 18/12/2023 09:24

'it selected an “androgynous” winner with a boyish haircut'

Boyish? Jaysus wept.

MarieDeGournay · 18/12/2023 09:27

Words fail me - well actually they don't, so here are some more:🙂
Long hair currently seems to be a sort of uber-signal of 'femininity' - even women's football matches are a feast of flicking pony-tails, not a short hairstyle to be seen. Not one. What are the odds? I'd expect simple personal choice to follow the same pattern as the general public, where some women have long hair, lots have shoulder-length-ish and some have short hair.

And for professional sportswomen in particular, isn't very long hair a bit of a nuisance to maintain? Is there pressure from agents/sponsors to look as stereotypically 'feminine' as possible?

Pinkcandychoc · 18/12/2023 09:32

Teen girls all have long hair now. If they don't they get asked if they're trans or gay. Or they may not be asked directly, but that's the assumption made by their peers.

It's insane. The world has gone backwards.

puffyisgood · 18/12/2023 09:33

Jesus Christ.

What is wrong with the world? On one hand we're supposed to not bat an eyelid at the suggestion that various lantern jawed blokes in dresses are great (female) beauties, but then on the other we're to be shocked that a (by the looks of it on my phone screen) conventionally stunning 20 year old woman with shortish hair can win a beauty contest?

Yes, we watched the women's World Cup earlier this year/ last year (can you tell I'm not the most avid sports fan) and there were lots of comments among the short-haired women I know about how almost every woman competing for England, at least, had long hair. Bizarre given how much easier a short haircut would be to maintain and not chance of your post-tail getting pulled or your hair getting into your eyes.

Sometimes I wonder if it would be better if women decided that "ultra feminine" should mean to have a short hair cut, comfortable clothes, trousers and no make up. Because then it would be a lot more difficult for men to imitate!

It's all a load of nonsense anyway. Bring back long curls, frills and heels with bows for men!

Mumsnut · 18/12/2023 10:28

Wonder how much Twitter outrage there would have been if a male with long hair identifying as a woman had won? So long as the stereotypes are adhered to, eh?

PuppyMcPupFace · 18/12/2023 10:36

@puncheur beautifully put

Apollo441 · 18/12/2023 10:49

Yeah this has never been done before. Here is a picture of Audrey Hepburn in 1956 not having short hair. And Louise Brooks in the 1920's. It's wokeness gone mad.

In North Korea women at least have a choice of sanctioned haircuts.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/12/2023 11:04

According to the link, she came third in the public vote, but the judges chose her as the winner. Maybe it's more to do with the public wanting someone else, who happens to have long hair.
As for that North Korea pic - wow! So no fringes? Claudia Winkleman would be in trouble!

MargotBamborough · 18/12/2023 11:07

Huh? She's literally wearing a big fuck off princess dress. There's nothing androgynous or indeed "woke" about that.

And I'm not a fan of these contests or judging women for their looks but that haircut really suits her.

BigBouncyBaubles · 18/12/2023 11:11

She looks like 1990 era Linda Evangelista.

We’re weirdly obsessed with women having long hair these days. Was thinking that yesterday when I was watching that crook Michelle Mone and her long beachy waves.

Slothtoes · 18/12/2023 11:17

Sexist people on the internet feel shocked at women daring to have short hair. And resent judges on beauty pageant panels being female and having the power to pick a winner. The word woke is being misapplied here I think

DarkDayforMN · 18/12/2023 11:23

Since she came third in the public vote, the “outrage” is probably just a bunch of old men huffing and puffing in whatever the French equivalent of the Telegraph is.

I wonder if a woman with short hair would do so well in the public vote here; the long haired identikit plasticky look seems like it’s here to stay.
