Miss France beauty contest: short-haired winner described as woke

Miss France beauty contest. The winner is a stunning 20-year-old, pictured in a swimsuit, who was the only woman in the contest to have short hair in what seems to be a Purdey-style cut. Apparently the French public are outraged about this display of woke inclusivity. Link to an archived Telegraph page.

All the shingled flappers: Mary Quant in the 60s: most of my friends at school in the 70s. All those years of feminism. And now apparently we were all androgynous and our short hair was 'inclusive'.

Since she came third in the public vote, the “outrage” is probably just a bunch of old men huffing and puffing in whatever the French equivalent of the Telegraph is.

It's not even happening in those sorts of papers.....I've no idea quite what the DM and DT were up to running that story other than they decided to cater for the Francophobe's amongst their readership.

FWIW lunchtime news on FR3 is leading with the French Women's handball team winning the World Championships ..still no sign of this supposed public outrage

It seems it’s already attempted diversity with women of all ages including mothers and transwomen.
This contestant described herself as androgynous because of the short hair and her more willowy figure. She feels the competition is dominated by more shapely contestants.

Abhannmor · 18/12/2023 11:51

That's it wrapped, @puncheur . Torygraph and Twitter. What a pair

EasternStandard · 18/12/2023 11:55

She looks great. I’d prefer female with short hair over the opposite to win anyway

She isn’t androgynous in the least. The world’s going backwards at an alarming rate.

She is a stunning young lady, not much more to say.

I used to love seeing gender non-conforming people as I perceived them as more interesting. Nowadays I am immediately on edge because I fear they might be trans and if they are trans they are highly likely not to be people I want to spend one second with, and they are likely to be pushing an ideology I regard as evil.

I can see how someone less open to gender non-conformity (and maybe a bit thick!) could make a mistake and think that a stunning young woman with a pixie cut is automatically gender non conforming and have negative thoughts as a result... sort of!

She is stunning and has a clearly female body shape.

Being more androgenous than someone with a Kim Kardashian look does not make someone androngenous!

She's absolutely beautiful and the haircut suits her perfectly. I thought there was a thing about the "French haircut" 🤔
Is that a thing of the past now? Or just for older (post menopausal therefore invisible) women?

I would happily donate the cost of a haircut if we could get a short hair campaign going to encourage young women to cut their hair.

Anything to put an end to this nonsense.

FannyCann · 18/12/2023 12:54

I used to love seeing gender non-conforming people as I perceived them as more interesting.

But she's not gender non conforming. She's slim ie not much bosom and has a short haircut like we all had back in the 70's/ 80's.

Ginmonkeyagain · 18/12/2023 13:10

Her hair is lovely and she is clearly a very beautiful woman. I would lime my hair (currently a chin length bob) to be like that l, but suspect it would look more like the classic seventies bowl cut.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 18/12/2023 13:13

My mum - who was rather glam and modelled back in the day - always had short hair. I think I only saw a photo of her with shoulder length hair in photos of her pregnant with my sister (late 50s).

T’was the fashion.

I agree completely... by having a pixie cut you are not the 100% perfect stereotype of a woman (dress, long hair, make-up etc)... but there is nothing GNC about one of the most beautiful female hairstyles going!

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 18/12/2023 13:16

I have a short hair cut

Was at a party and my friend was asking people did I look gay

2 or 3 late 50s people said yes I did but when a 20 year old lad said I didn't look gay just because I had short hair they said it was cos he was woke

Weird party

FannyCann · 18/12/2023 13:57

Yes, we watched the women's World Cup earlier this year/ last year (can you tell I'm not the most avid sports fan) and there were lots of comments among the short-haired women I know about how almost every woman competing for England, at least, had long hair.

And here are some Olympic swimmers, UK and Australian. Not a single one with short hair. My nieces in Australia have always had short hair, from childhood. So much easier with the swimming and the heat. To have the bother of hair care on top of everything else a pro swimmer has to do is just madness!

When I was younger and doing sport, I found long hair (as in shoulder length) easier as it could be fixed out of the way rather than flopping about.
DD finds the same (although she also wears a big band around her head to stop wispy bits.

Oddly their are boys on her team with long hair who just leave it down.... (mixed team as shes Primary school)

Marblessolveeverything · 18/12/2023 14:21

My teen son commented on this at breakfast - he gets a summary news feed. Needless to say he was completely confused when the image appeared of a striking model appeared, he had anticipated a man by the comments in the article.

Not a fan of the competition but feel very unsettled that a stunning young woman's hair style is so in focus.

Marblessolveeverything · 18/12/2023 14:24

Those of you commenting on long hair equaling maintenance- I would strongly disagree. As a woman who typically has hair down to lower back it is a hell of a lot less work than a short style to maintain. Very few are blessed with hair that sits where it is meant to post washing.

StarlightLady · 18/12/2023 14:39

This sounds like huge media rubbish to me. You refer to “the French public”, l wonder how many people this actually refers to.

Surely the bigger question is should their be a Miss France Beauty Contest at all?

For the record, I’m a UK born former resident of Paris. And yes, l have long hair. Lots of French women don’t though.

WhereAreWeNow · 18/12/2023 20:57

I don't get this story. Surely the French led the way in making gamine, pixie crops fashionable for women?
I know Jean Seaburg wasn't French but this look in A Bout de Souffle was about as French as it gets!

Audrey Tautou looking super French and gorgeous.

Honestly its France.

What do people expect!!!!

Pewpewbarneymcgrew · 18/12/2023 21:02

The same crop that made Linda a supermodel, the French girl is stunning !

TheClitterati · 18/12/2023 21:30

Everything about this story is completely ridiculous

OneMorePlant · 18/12/2023 21:32

This is a fake outrage story. The French did not care about her hair. In fact most don't care at all.

The only rumblings that I saw on twitter was because there were 2 candidates that were way more popular than her and people felt those women were cheated out of a deserved first spot just because they chose the candidate with the short hair because of the short hair. Which is as dumb as it sounds.

The other candidates that were way more popular were Miss Guyane and Miss Guadeloupe

TempestTost · 18/12/2023 21:44

I wonder, had she not commented on the haircut, and diversity etc, if people would really have picked up on it in the same way. I suspect not so much.

And I also wonder if, in an effort to change the perception of the contest as outdated, she ight have been asked to make that statement.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/12/2023 01:16

Just goes to show how "Woke" has been appropriated to mean anything RW people don't like. So completely meaningless.🙄
