Visiting a local senior school. I asked about single sex spaces, and this was the response:

toilets are split male/female, but children are allowed to use whichever one they feel most comfortable in

there is a large, active alphabet club, supported by teachers who are identified by special lanyards

everyone is very supportive, happily use chosen names & preferred pronouns

the school is very inclusive (race/religion mentioned as well) and will seek to educate any children who do not ‘live up to our high standards’

there has never been any complaint from students about any of this

i’m getting a very bad feeling about how children are being coerced to behave in this setting :-(

That's grim. It wouldn't be somewhere I'd have sent my children.

I bet they don't do as much to support children with disabilities or facing poverty.

HagoftheNorth · 09/12/2023 07:24

Yep - I did specifically ask how the girls felt about it - apparently nobody is volunteering for the re-education 😳

A school treating their students like human beings and to have respect for everyone? Doesn't seem a bad place at all. Pity the wider world is not as tolerant and respectful.

FantasticElasticBand · 09/12/2023 12:46

What are ages of the kids?

I understood there is a legal requirement to have single sex spaces over 8yrs old.

Respect for everyone except of course girls . I think you missed that bit. And of course you meant tolerance except of course for people of other faiths, beliefs, and conflicting needs with gender ideology.

I do get that the alternative reality version sounds jolly lovely, but it's a lot of lies covering a lot of rather nasty problems that don't involve tolerance or respect or inclusion, lets face it.

OP cross this one off your list and run. The hills are that way. >>

Wouldnt send a daughter there if I could avoid it. Might consider it for a son but only if I was quite sure they were not gay or autistic and there were no decent choices. .

Mishy, what do you actually suggest for the girls who feel uncomfortable managing their periods with boys listening in the next door cubicle (they don’t even have to claim a special identity to use the girls’ loos, just today’s preference), the Muslim girl who wants a female-only space to adjust her headscarf, or (god forbid, but many schools have them) the sexual abuse survivor who can’t use the toilet if a boy could be so nearby? How about the girls and boys who just want a bit of privacy and dignity away from the opposite sex?

The truth is, not everyone in the world is lovely, not all teenagers are angels (see the story where a girl was injured because a boy kicked the cubicle door off its hinges). There is a reason why we have single sex facilities in the first place, and you would do well to understand them before deciding to just sweep them all away. But none of this matters to you does it Mishy, because the people being made uncomfortable here are girls, and you can always tell the difference between the sort of girls you want to accommodate and those you don’t give a shit about

Well said.

It’s not treating the girls who need single sex spaces for religious, medical or just personal choice reasons with respect though is it?

FrancescaContini · 10/12/2023 07:41

The lanyards alone would have me running away from this school.

shockeditellyou · 10/12/2023 07:43

I’d also be asking myself if they’re taking advice from Stonewall, where is their due diligence with regards to partner organisations?

It's not treating people like human beings, it's allowing boys to go into the girls' toilets. That's not treating the girls as human beings it's treating them as objects or things that have no right to preferences about changing, peeing, changing tampons and towels in the same space as boys are allowed to be.

MigGirl · 10/12/2023 08:23

Most local high schools round here have open mixed sex toilets. They are staffed at break and lunch, I actually like this in my day the toilets where a place you never ventured unless desperate for fear of the bullies who lurked there as teachers couldn't go in and didn't know what was happening. Much more likely to be builed then any of the other things you mentioned.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/12/2023 08:28

@mygirl why can't the teachers just ensure that single sex toilets are safe?

HagoftheNorth · 10/12/2023 08:29

I am very curious about what the girls there actually think. It was clear that any failure to accept the TWAW narrative would be met by ‘appropriate education to help the student understand how to behave more respectfully’ with an option of some sort of consequence (eg loss of privileges?) if the behaviour was repeated. That’s obviously an atmosphere where no girl would be disclosing her discomfort
