Fyi if you're in the Richmond area.
Here's the Richmond MVAWG strategy: https://www.richmond.gov.uk/media/23951/violence_against_women_and_girls_strategy_2022_25.pdf
The clarity and apparent lack of flimflammery on this poster and in the wording of the stragey fill me with positivity. Councillor Katie Mansfield is a White Ribbon Champion, anyone know more about her?

Which Richmond?

Helleofabore · 04/12/2023 16:36

London Richmond.

Sorry, Richmond Upon Thames (says it on the poster but print's very small).

I hadn't particularly read the poster until mentioned, and had a look at it.

It appears that the Walk is actually being organised by The White Ribbon Campaign which is actually a men's group. How ironic that when men acknowledge and talk about men's violence against women no one challenges it! https://www.whiteribbon.org.uk/

But you can bet if a women's group tried to organise on that basis there would be challenges about being transphobic etc..

There have been quite a few marches / walks and some at least say "women led" but some have now been co-opted by local councils to be part of their safer neighbourhood projects.

Hope it goes well. Are you going?

White Ribbon UK

Our mission is to end men's violence against women, once and for all. We work with men and boys to challenge cultures that lead to harassment, abuse and violence.

IwantToRetire ahh that might explain the clarity of language.

I hadn't heard of WR but a feminist friend of mine just messaged me to say she wasn't supporting them anymore because they supported legalised prostitution. I couldn't find out more about that specifically and the Richmond strategy says prostitution is violence so I'm confused about who believes what.

Oh and I'd like to go but have realised I'll be away that weekend.

they supported legalised prostitution

eek! I hadn't heard that.

They used to be quite well known when it was "fashionable" for football teams etc., to support the campaign against violence against women.

I think since then footballers have taken up any number of causes.

Oh well don't put too much stock in that, I couldn't see anything to confirm or refute it.

White Ribbon are TWAW.

White Ribbon are TWAW.

Can you give a link. Cant find anything on their web site. Thanks.

Thelnebriati · 04/12/2023 21:40

I think that's mostly in places where they have self ID, like Canada and California.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 04/12/2023 21:41

It's from an email someone I know received as a response to the question of what they meant by "women", so unfortunately I can't link to anything. You could try emailing them yourself and post the response here.

I'll take your word for it. Wouldn't surprise me.

If that is their position then it should be on their web site, other wise it is misrepresentation.

I agree.
