Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

That's a fantastic article. She is so clear and has the perfect answers for every challenging question. God it's always so good to hear, and you feel it in your core, when someone speaks with integrity!
Thank you for posting OP

Oh my god that interviewer is an ass! I can’t believe how rude she is.

You certainly would have not wanted to be tested for your testosterone levels or anything else to Martina. After telling her an anecdote about how some cousin of hers called Martina a man when she was playing Chris Evert. (And I think the anecdote was made up to be insulting. Martina was never masculine.)

AllAroundMyCat · 01/12/2023 16:59

I do think she's spot on .

She is very switched on regarding trans issues and will have researched this issue at length before reaching her conclusion.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/12/2023 17:03

She's brilliant - just like Sharron Davies, knowledgeable, informed and articulate. So good to have these wise women speaking up.

TooTiredToType77 · 01/12/2023 17:48

She. Is. Brilliant. What a biased interviewer

CriticalCondition · 01/12/2023 18:10

A brilliant interview. Fresh air and sunlight from Martina.

SirChenjins · 01/12/2023 18:25

Absolutely brilliant interview - Martina calmly wiped the floor with the interviewer with her measured, insightful, well informed, intelligent responses.

Tinysoxxx · 01/12/2023 18:42

She is good!

CorruptedCauldron · 01/12/2023 18:46

I could not love her more. What a queen! So calm, measured, articulate and wise.

QueenBitch666 · 01/12/2023 20:26

Awesome woman 🩷

Delphinium20 · 01/12/2023 20:36

When you come from of a country formally held under Soviet control and propaganda, it's much easier to see an ideology and the lies it uses to bewitch those who don't have strength of mind. Martina Navratilova is sound of mind, body and character and a true role model for girls and women. So grateful for her voice.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 01/12/2023 20:43

It is a great article. I still find it difficult to comprehend quite how far this has all gone int the US; how deep the capture and lack of empathy for women runs.

BeyondHumanKenneth · 01/12/2023 20:43

I am so embarrassed for that journalist.

The line of questioning is infantile - my relative once said a completely irrelevant and mean thing about you, so why are you being so mean by not acquiescing to males in women's sports?

littlbrowndog · 01/12/2023 20:44

Go martina. She is just a great person for tennis and women and girls

Coyoacan · 01/12/2023 20:51

She's also been a very staunch supporter of the Palestinians. Wonderful woman

determinedtomakethiswork · 01/12/2023 21:20

She is amazing. I love her. Thank you for posting this.

I wonder if Kara Swisher had even a moment during or after that interview where they had a flicker of insight or doubt. Imagine asking Martina Navratilova some of those questions and not dying of embarrassment on the spot.

NumberTheory · 01/12/2023 21:39

For all that some of those questions lacked any sort of journalistic professionalism, Swisher did interview her and gave her the space to speak. And to speak to an audience that is not normally given access to those views.

PermanentTemporary · 01/12/2023 22:03

You're right @NumberTheory. And it would be just as bad not to give any kind of challenge or probe.

The interviewer manages to squeeze in the lies of Michael Phelps AND Caster Semenya, that’s quite an achievement🙄

Delphinium20 · 01/12/2023 22:48

Maybe the editors cut this for clarity because I was expecting Navratilova to point out the lack of sports knowledge for anyone talking about Phelps. He is a great swimmer but other male swimmers have beaten his records and he's got some events where other male peers could routinely beat him in. Phelps also was a crazy disciplined athlete and trained harder than a lot of other competitive swimmers (his daily training regime was almost 365). He deserved his accolades not because he's some human marvel but because he worked his tail off (pun intended).

You'd have to know the ins and outs of competitive swimming to elaborate on this, so maybe she as a tennis great didn't want to get into the weeds on another sport but I can always tell if one is a non-sporty person if they bring up the Phelps argument, so either Kara knows nothing about swimming or she used that question to give Navratilova an opportunity to squash it.

Either way, Martina gave a genius interview!!!

LuckyFlickerman · 02/12/2023 00:42

God, this interviewer is a right numpty.

Martina's fantastic. I was delighted to see her mentioned in a book I was reading that delved into feminist history. She's consistently stood for women's rights all this time - what a legend!

thirdfiddle · 02/12/2023 02:52

either Kara knows nothing about swimming or she used that question to give Navratilova an opportunity to squash it.

Yes almost too perfect a stooge - either she's sympathetic or she's really not very clever. To contrive sporting metaphors she's serving Martina a series of looping balls perfect for smashing to all corners of the court.

I remember watching her play towards the end of her career when I was young. Initially I was cheering on her opposition - plucky young kids going up against the champion etc. Then I remember her pioneering wearing shorts at Wimbledon, something I can't believe didn't catch on more. Doing sport in little skirts always looks so impractical. Perhaps any tennis players out there can explain. But at a time we were fighting to be allowed trousers at school that made me team Martina.

And all the more so now, she's been such a icon for LGB and yes T rights through her friendship with Richards, her credentials are impeccable. And while I don't agree with her approach of trying to find a way men can be handicapped to enable them to compete with women, the fact that she tried and failed shows how very sympathetic she is and how weak the case is for sport by identity.
