Tesco Ireland - Drag Queen

MinceFlies · 30/11/2023 20:05

Well, Tesco have shoved their mince pies where the sun don't shine - down the top of this man who hates women

Don't they realise how insulting this is to the women of Ireland who are largely in charge of the purse strings when it comes to grocery shopping? Go woke, go broke.

Time for mná na hÉireann to vote with their feet and take their business elsewhere. Thankfully, we have choice. We have Dunnes, SuperValu, Centra, etc and the German stores.

On the same day that I received a voucher for 10 off 40 for Tesco, I have decided to take my business to another retailer for a while.

As if the whole drag thing wasn't offensive enough, check out the level of nastiness and threat in PB's response. Unfortunately he's untouchable, a symbol of how far we've come from repressed Ireland of the past etc etc...
To contextualise for those unfamiliar with him - he's a gay man who does drag, and very very present in the media in Ireland.

PurpleBugz · 30/11/2023 21:41

Is this the one called pantie Claus?

Sooo insulting

Freda69 · 30/11/2023 22:02

He reminds me of Dick Emery - ‘you are awful but I like you’. Is it meant to be funny? Are we still in the 70s?
Horrible, archaic misogyny.

ArthurbellaScott · 01/12/2023 07:04

Grim.

Abhannmor · 01/12/2023 08:23

Dick Emery never tried to get women's political rights removed though afaik.

Panti Bliss is a nasty piece of work.

FrancescaContini · 01/12/2023 08:30

Panti Claus?? We’re back in the era of Benny Hill. Very depressing.

Abhannmor · 01/12/2023 08:35

As a drag queen he's not exactly RuPaul either. More the Izzard of Was level.

SunnieShine · 01/12/2023 08:41

Gross 🤢

ArthurbellaScott · 01/12/2023 08:42

'Panti Bliss'.

The name alone is doing great work for publicising the fetishistic aspects of trans and drag.

Ferriswheels · 01/12/2023 09:38

Very disappointing!!
I will be letting Tesco know what I think of this and shopping elsewhere.
It's very disrespectful to women and also to Christmas, which is a religious festival after all.

StephanieSuperpowers · 01/12/2023 09:49

That's truly a horror show.

MarieDeGournay · 01/12/2023 10:05

'Are we still in the 70s?' is a good objection -judging from online comments on this video that I've seen, saying something is misogynistic or offensive to women is seen as the usual dinosaurs trying to drag Ireland back to the intolerant days in... well, the 70s, for example.

The video is on TikTok, i.e. aimed at the demographic who think that drag proves how progressive and cutting edge they are. Saying how old-fashioned, passé and out of sync with 21st century values around not appropriating other people's identities it is might be a more effective argument than the misogyny one.
Unfortunately, being offensive to women is a 'win' to so many people that they seem to positively relish accusations of misogyny.

DeanElderberry · 01/12/2023 10:05

but but but

RTE definitely gave me to understand that he's a national treasure

Unfortunately I can't flounce away from shopping with Tesco because I've always thought them overpriced, poor quality, and not honest with small suppliers. Hey for Lidl, Aldi and independent businesses.

Villagetoraiseachild · 01/12/2023 13:06

The best xmas ad so far this year is:

  1. The one for the pub in Enniskillen, made on a mobile phone. 2)The racoon one, Lidl.

I did do a quick convenience shop in the Tesco this week, but happy to swerve them in solidarity.

MinceFlies · 01/12/2023 14:01

Ah, look, it's Panti and Peter, all loved up. Could Tesco have any less child friendly man to promote shopping there?

Izzard of Was

Off-topic but I love that, thank you.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/12/2023 21:24

Well. He's an obnoxious shit, isn't he?

Dontgivemeplants · 02/12/2023 00:16

WHY can't people see through this awful, regressive, self serving misogynist!???

Ferriswheels · 02/12/2023 01:49

The ad is very regressive, I agree.

In particular, the name used (Panti Claus) puts me in mind of the Pussy Galore/Honey Rider style Bond girl names. I had honestly thought that we had moved on from acceptance of this sort of overt sexism.

This is a retrograde step, Tesco.

They were attempting to be inclusive, but why that has to involve demeaning women I don't know. I'm a middle-aged woman. Why they'd think I'd find the name Panti Bliss/Claus in the slighest bit amusing or appealing or in any way acceptable I really don't know.

How does the use of a name like Panti Bliss/Claus foster inclusivity anyway?

It's clear I'm not Tesco's target audience here, but that may be a mistake on their part. I suppose it's also sexist, but a lot of women like me still make the decisions about where their family shop. And I'm not a fan of Tesco right now, to put it very mildly indeed.

quantumbutterfly · 02/12/2023 05:43

There is nothing progressive about 'womanface'.

Wonder what Tessa Cohen would have thought.

Abhannmor · 02/12/2023 08:43

But just who is the target audience @Ferriswheels . Presumably it's the students who think Panti is in the vanguard of the revolution. But they won't be straight and sober til Jan 6th. Minimum. They might drag themselves into Tesco to get a slab of Heineken I suppose.

The firm is named for Tessa Cohen I'm guessing @quantumbutterfly ?

theDudesmummy · 02/12/2023 08:46

I have posted about this before, but I had a real dilemma regarding this man some time ago. My DS loves Strictly, Dancing with the Stars etc (he's autistic and these kind of shows are big "special interests" to him, ie he can't miss them and when they are on he literally structures his life around them). They had this man as one of the contestants on Dancing with the Stars (and made such a thing about it). I couldn't boycott the show so had to watch with gritted teeth. Ugh.

theDudesmummy · 02/12/2023 08:54

I can boycott Tesco though. Christmas shop Aldi, Dunnes and Lidl now... (side note but Lidl has some lovely Christmas goodies!)

Abhannmor · 02/12/2023 09:29

In that photo with Tatchell , Panti is such a big strapping lad isn't he? I see Jonny Sexton and Keith Earls have retired. Couple of handy vacancies in the Irish rugby team for Panti and 'Sara' Phillips.

After all rugby needs to be inclusive.
