Hadn't heard of this. Was actually shocked, which doesn't happen often anymore.

Crumbs, so sad that it is so little known 😢

I only learned about it a year or so ago- on here. It’s an extraordinary event, and should be more widely known.

Catsanfan · 26/11/2023 08:06

@pickledandpuzzled I agree. Very sad.

A transwoman was invited to speak at the memorial at least twice.

Absurd wokeness and bloody offensive to actual women

A transwoman was invited to speak at the memorial at least twice.

From what I've seen, it's been a lightning rod for their territorial pissings.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/11/2023 11:54

I didn't hear about it till many years later either.

And more femicides since.

And women are still underrepresented in engineering (and nowadays 'tech') ... how much of that should be attributed to male hostility to women 'taking their places' (even if subconscious), I wonder?

TempestTost · 26/11/2023 12:12

It's well known in Canada and for many years was observed in the media on the anniversary. It still is to some extent but a little less over, maybe the last 5 years?

But I guess it's not surprising that other countries don't necessarily know a lot about it.

The Montreal Massacre (unlike others ) is remembered every year as it is one of the 16 Days of Action Against Violence Against Women, but would agree that in media terms this mass shooting of women doesn't get the same coverage as violence against women as individuals.

And unfortunately, and not just because it is Canada, more of these events supposed to focus on women who experience male violence because of their sex are now colonised by men.

Which are the 16 Days and Why?
