Naomi really puts it excellently in that short clip. Thank you for posting. It's a good one to share with people new to these arguments.

Helleofabore · 22/11/2023 09:09

Naomi is very articulate on this. Thanks for posting.

CriticalCondition · 22/11/2023 17:59

Thank you for sharing that first clip. She is so clear and measured. An excellent one for explaining to 'newbies' what the problem is with preferred pronouns.

And the second clip is a lovely demo of how to respond to the pronoun declaration 'request'.

'Be more Naomi' is my motto in these situations now.

Villagetoraiseachild · 22/11/2023 19:37

Great!
This is a go to resource on the pronouns issue now.
Thank you.

"I'm going to use they/them because I'm not sure of Naomi's pronouns."

Yes you are, you just want to be a dick- in exactly the way you claim is mean if others do it.

Thing is, Naomi doesn't give a shit becuase she's not 13YO.

Agrona · 22/11/2023 22:45

The pronouns are receiving so much attention. Do you think verbs, nouns and adjectives are feeling like their existence is being denied?

(Bad joke, sorry.)

Naomi Cunningham captures the harms of being coerced to complying in advance, even if the C21 version is that it's merely being courteous and kind.

Whether it's Lifton's Eight Criteria for Thought Reform, Snyder's consideration of language in On Tyranny, or Havel's The Power of the Powerless, oppression and tyranny involve restrictions on language and the policing of behaviour through the normalisation of harming.

Lesson One: Because enough people in both cases voluntarily extended their services to the new leaders, Nazis and communists alike realized that they could move quickly toward full regime change. The first heedless acts of conformity could not then be reversed (18).
Tyrants need willing functionaries to carry out their agenda. What’s more worrisome is that functionaries do not just follow orders as is sometimes suggested: instead, they have actively promoted the tyrant’s agenda.

Havel: We have seen that the real meaning of the greengrocer’s slogan has nothing to do with what the text of the slogan actually says. Even so, the real meaning is quite clear and generally comprehensible because the code is so familiar: the greengrocer declares his loyalty in the only way the regime is capable of hearing; that is, by accepting the prescribed ritual, by accepting appearances as reality, by accepting the given rules of the game, thus making it possible for the game to go on, for it to exist in the first place (36-7).
The phrase “accepting appearances as reality” is key
