The disturbing documentary 'Escaping twin flames' is proof that becoming trans can be coerced.

The Netflix documentary shows the journey of a couple who start a spiritual business/cult proportadly to help clients to find their 'twin flame' - the one true love they are meant to be with.
They coerce young women into being in unsuitable relationships with men who they proclaimed their 'twin flame'. One young woman is told that a man who randomly contacts her on facebook is her twin flame- he has bipolar disorder and she has an abusive three year relationship with him.
The Twin Flame 'Guru' tries to think of more ways to get money out of his customers through marketing initiatives but also seems to enjoy the power of playing with their lives. He proclaims himself to be the second coming of Jesus and wants to buy a ranch where the devotees will live and so far so predictable cult like behaviour.
There is a problem in the business model however as most of the 'clients' are young women so he hits on the idea of telling some of them that they are men and paring them up with other devotees.
The women try to comply, getting men's haircuts and changing their names, some leave at this point. The fact is though that some do go though with it and they go on to have relationships with women (although many were not lesbians prior to this) Some who are told that they are men and some go on to take cross sex hormones and 'transition'.
At this point the documentary cuts to a lecturer from the trans lobby who comes on to reassure us and say that trans is all about being your true self and that this is a terrible example of a cult using abusive practices (I guess the film makers had to put that in to protect themselves from attack from the trans lobby) but nevertheless it shows that randomly assigning an impressionable person a male gender can result in that person transitioning and if you think about the wider implications - a parent telling a child that they are the opposite sex or the slow grooming of a young person on line or at LGBT clubs or chatrooms - this is proof that people can be confused and influenced by others to change sex and so your 'gender' is not innate.

It is also ‘proof’ that being in a romantic relationship can be coerced. Should we ban romantic relationships?

Buffypaws · 21/11/2023 10:14

romantic relationships are posited as the optimal outcome for any human. They are essential for the survival of our species. I couldn’t say the same about grooming people into believing they are the opposite sex and getting sterilised.

this is a terrible example of a cult using abusive practices

But it was though.

Lots of things can be coerced. Probably everything tbh. In this situation we had same-sex relationships being coerced. That doesn't mean your sexuality is not innate. Or do you now also think that there is no-one truly straight / gay?

There is already a thread to discuss this documentary.

I think there are people who are exclusively attracted to the opposite or same sex, as well as people who are attracted both sexes.

I don't think there are people who have a "female brain" in a male body or vice versa. I think this is a mental health condition or an affectation, and I agree, subject to social contagion.

The earlier thread about this "escaping Twin Flames" forced gender transitions www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4939803-4939803-escaping-twin-flames-forced-gender-transitions

Thanks for the link to the earlier thread.
I think the difference between changing your sex is all the medical interventions- transition is permanent whereas sexuality can be experimental.
