Spotted this amazing nonsense on a USA medical website.

"People who are breastfeeding, receiving treatment for cancer or who have had their ovaries removed, can experience vaginal atrophy..."

Are women not people?

Agrona · 14/11/2023 08:38

People? Breastfeeding? Ovaries?

Vagina. Ovaries?

Which people could these be?

WOMEN!

Maddy you DO get it, don't you, hurrah.

OP did not mention women, you made that connection all by yourself. I am so happy for you.

So you clocked it too! Glad your brain went straight to the people who weren't named but you named them in your response with such alacrity and bravery. Bravo!

I've had gynaecological cancer, and I've had to repeat over and over and over again that because of sexual assault, I only want female staff to examine me, but they keep forgetting. Yet they've paid attention to changing woman to person on numerous websites. It's really fucking invalidating, as if having cancer wasn't bad enough in the first place.

Of course women have vaginas that's never been in question I'm referring to the outrage at the use of people women are indeed people I see no issue with that being used teenagers and girls also have vaginas and aren't women.

Well the speed at which you decided it was about women when the word "people" was questioned, I think you should trust your own gut reaction about who the target demography is!

Boiledbeetle · 14/11/2023 10:56

At some point maybe the world will regain its collective sanity! Until then I'll be in the corner banging my head against a wall! I'm so sick of the erasure of woman/women in medical stuff especially.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/11/2023 11:04

Of course women have vaginas.

That's because they are female, and only women and girls have vaginas. "People" is dehumanising language which alienates many women. It's not the right language for medical communication aimed at engaging with patients or potential patients.

The target is people with vaginas .... women, girls , teenagers or transitioning people who have a vagina

All are people

But they are not men. And to differentiate between men and women in the overall group of people, it would be clear and respectful to name the subgroup of people that is being referred to: women. Or women and girls if you want to include all ages.
What you don't want to do in medical care is obfuscate who you are talking about by adding in men into the equation by using the word people.

I read it as anyone receiving treatment for cancer can get vaginal atrophy. Including men.

People are men and women. Men do not get vaginal atrophy. Thus using "people" is wrong.

Pretty sure my teenage daughters are women as well.

People with vaginas! Yes! So it isn't all people then! wonderful.
And there's even an accurate list to identify the subset. Beautiful.

I admire the accuracy. Did you mean all women can have vaginal atrophy as a result of cancer treatment?
