I think it's about a love triangle, or someone that's taken on an "inbetween days" lover on the side.

It's weird to say it's about a trans person, that doesn't make sense - what would all the "feeling old" stuff be referring to in the first verse?

I will eat my hat if Robert Smith intended it to be trans-related. Still, the listener is free to interpret song lyrics in a way that resonates with them. Even if they’re way off the mark!

Well trans is the modern day version of Goth, so i guess it makes a kind of sense

It’s more likely to be about a long relationship splitting up and he’s not sure what to do isn’t it? There’s an in between girl that makes him realise it’s the original girlfriend he actually wants? Or something.

No idea how you can get anything trans out of that?

Or the other theory is it’s about the Simon Gallup split in the early 80s …

Just researched it a bit more it seems that Pal changed his name to Pearl as it was always a nick name. Also seems that trans sites have changed the words to “be like you” General consensus on other sites is no its not about trans… apart from trans sites that is. Phew

Glad to hear your update OP, was worried there! I've just bought two The Cure and a Siouxie album for the car's CD player, would be really miffed with Robert Smith if he was suddenly TWAW, because I really thought he was more intelligent than that.

It doesn't need an eye roll. I was confused by the title for a moment and thought I'd got the name/song wrong so I looked it up hence my confusion and v specific post. I was obviously also confused by the OPs meaning by her post so no need to jump to the worst conclusions. I am ND so sometimes misinterpret things if they aren't clear.
