A particularly worrying quote from the article. The further you read the worse it gets.

"When she was told by loved ones to seek help for her dissociative identity disorder (DID), which she had not been diagnosed with at the time, Layton googled her symptoms and found services from therapist Julie Lyons, an expert in transgender and dissociative therapy.
Notably, Ulery said that when she first went to see Lyons she did not consider herself to be transgender, but was quickly pushed towards transgenderism and alleges that Lyons 'fixated' on the fact that she had male alter identities.
Lyons allegedly 'quickly jumped to the conclusion that Layton had gender dysphoria and began convincing Layton she was a transgender man in need of further medicalization.'
Further than pushing her to transition, the lawsuit alleges that she 'crossed numerous lines' in their sessions, including inviting her boyfriend into a therapy session where they performed 'experimental hypnosis techniques' on her.
It is also alleged that when Layton couldn't pay for her ongoing treatment, Lyons allowed her to continue so long as she recruited new patients into her practice."

De-transitioner with multiple personalities slams doctors for therapy

A North Carolina lesbian slammed doctors who led her down a path of transitioning as a 'fractured and unstable' adolescent, despite suffering from multiple personality disorder.

I thought multiple personality disorder had been debunked as sort of a myth?

In a way that doesn't change this story, clearly this person had significant issues.

I couldn't say on the veracity of the diagnosis of the condition, but its been considered for decades before it became a fashionable self ID/LARP one. Usually associated with people with very severe trauma, so (not unlike the population at risk of wrong/pushed diagnosis) highly vulnerable with often multiple complex histories and needs.

The poor woman. Another example of why this field needs very, very strongly regulating. Vulnerable patients, and there are less than professional or objective practitioners who have their own agendas and skin in the game and are not necessarily exclusively focused on the best interests of the fragile and struggling person in front of them.

DID is rare but is a genuine disorder.

There was an interesting article by Libby Purves in the Times today - trans not mentioned. In sum she said it was not right that therapy should not be regulated in the UK eg anyone can set up as a therapist, charge fees and do what they want. There are professional bodies but you do not have to join them and if they strike you off you can legally continue to practise. The UK seems to be the only country in the First World where psychotherapists do not have to be registered, train or adhere to codes of conduct. Purves acknowledges there are some good and valuable pscychotherapists (and that bizarrely music and art therapists do have to register) but that it's open season for those wanting to make a buck offering therapy to those who can't get on to NHS psychiatry lists.

I think this is the same case Eliza Mondegreen writes about in Unherd. I hope all the therapists involved get taken to the cleaners.

I read the Libby Purves article and was gobsmacked. I wasn't aware that you could practice as a therapist in this country with no licence of any kind. Obviously, it doesn't apply to this detransitioners case as they're in the US.

Detransitioner files lawsuit against 'gender-affirming' clinicians

Dr. Michelle Forcier, a blue-haired professor and paediatrician from Rhode Island, was the breakout star of Matt Walsh’s 2022 documentary, What is a Woman? In a bizarre exchange, Walsh asked, “If I see a chicken laying eggs and I say that’s a female ch...

Spent ages trying to find this original thread!
Anyway, Layton and another detransitioner (Nicolas Blooms) are on this podcast episode- along with the very wise jungian psychoanalyst/therapist Bob Withers (of CAN-SG- Critical Advisory Network on Sex and Gender. Who held the recent First Do No Harm conference)

I thought this was a fascinating, thought-provoking episode. Also, wonderful to hear how Layton is able to transform her own experience to help others.

Bob Withers is always good to hear, IMO.

Just sharing in case anyone would appreciate this, and hear more from Layton.
