'Defence advocate Victoria Dow told the court that Miller "recognises and feels the horror of his conduct" and was said to feel an "enduring sense of shame".
Miller was also said to have expressed concern over how his behaviour would affect the wider trans community.'

I’m no prison expert either stealtheatingtunnocks but you do hear of bad stuff happening to paedos. Ian Watkins, the lostprophets paedo scumbag was recently stabbed to within an inch of his life, and Soham murderer Ian Huntley has also been attacked in the past.

The risk of vigilantes descending is real - but prison is not always the safest place for paedos, they tend to be a target inside.

There are a number of dedicated prisons for sex offenders, such as Littlehey, where Max Clifford was held; I've a relative who works there. I think that the highest category offenders may not be eligible, as they are held in the highest security institutions.

High profile offenders are supposed to be watched closely, as they are targets. I don't condone it, but it's hardly surprising that sometimes the screes aren't watching as carefully as they might.

I agree, it is a problem. A person is given a sentence, not a sentence with “plus any assault other inmates feel like because you are a scumbag child rapist”. Just as women shouldn’t have rape added to their sentence because politicians and prison services aren’t brave enough to say “you’re not female, mate”.

the system is not good enough, no one should be attacked in jail. But fixing that requires investment, and governments have not cared about jails for a long time.

it is worse for society to have lynchings. As Arabella says, inside there are people who will at least try to prevent assaults (if they want to) and they’ll be successful most of the time (if they want to). Outside? Not a chance.

ArcaneWireless · 26/10/2023 18:10

Apparently this sorry excuse for a human is appealing the length of his sentence.

Apparently it is too long.

Naw it isnae.

ArabellaScott · 26/10/2023 22:58

I just saw that, Arcane.

'Judge Lord Arthurson said the crime was "frankly nauseating in its level of depravity and criminal deviance".
Lawyers for Miller, 53, also know as Amy George, believe the jail term is too long.
They have lodged documents with the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh.'

One small mercy - 'Miller is being held in a male prison in line with new guidelines for trans prisoners who commit sexual offences that were introduced following an outcry over the Isla Bryson case.'

I appreciate you can’t sentence someone for what might have happened had that child not managed to call for help, but given one of the most likely outcomes, 20 years isn’t a minute too long.

bombastix · 26/10/2023 23:44

It should go up! 20 years is not enough. I don't know if they do ULSS in Scotland.

SinnerBoy · 27/10/2023 01:36

There have been a few cases over the past couple of years, in which sentences have actually been increased. We can only hope...

EtiennePalmiere · 27/10/2023 02:16

Great comments from the judge who really had this guy's number! Sickening case.

Do you know what's painted on the road outside Cardiff Castle, right next to the grassed area where he was sitting?

The "Progress" flag

Hahahaha

I am re-reading Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith (AKA JK Rowling) and just noticed the irony that Miller's of Melrose features in the book (Strike goes there for two venison pies).

She then goes on to describe the violent, sadistic offender (hailing from the town) who when talking about getting women to walk home with him or get in a car you can 'get them to do almost anything with if you, if you make them forget you have a dick'.

You could cry transphobic if it hadn't been written nearly a decade before this.

But of course JKR is just a bigot who needs to be educated.......
The reference is a total coincidence but made me sit up in a way it didn't on first read before this case.

How fitting that the woman targeted for the 'things that will never happen' included such a reference in describing a dangerous man willing to take on any identity to give him access to victims.

I'm actually quite freaked out about this 'coincidence'.

I wonder if she visited the shop 10 years ago when she wrote it and saw him dressed as Amy.

Well, she did visit the shop afair, and bought pies. He had a display in the window about it.

'A TRANS butcher charged over an 11-year-old girl’s disappearance was “trying to look like JK Rowling” during his gender swap, locals claimed yesterday.
Andrew Miller, 53, is said to have modelled himself on the Harry Potter author, 57, when calling himself Amy and wore garish women’s clothes and make-up around town.'

One might think that JK has a very good understanding of people indeed.

AuContraire · 06/11/2023 14:44

I suppose it probably is what you'd think if you went into a butchers and were greeted by a man pretending to be a woman, given what we know about men with that particular paraphilia.

We just have to pretend not to know it now.

ArabellaScott · 17/11/2023 16:21

Yes. He shouldn't be allowed to.

JKR really has great insight into human nature. She's usually spot on. I think that's partly why her books are so good (there are many other reasons too).

Let's hope Millar's sentence is lengthened if anything.

I do think the judge in this case really did have Millar's number and was excellent. I wish all judges were like this.

pronounsbundlebundle · 17/11/2023 16:44

I mean does ANYONE think Millar will stop being a risk in 20 years? I don't. If he gets released he'll do it again.

Not to mention why the fuck should that girl, who will only be in her 30s in 20 years, have to put up with him being released? Personally I'd make it life.

pronounsbundlebundle · 17/11/2023 16:45

I REALLY hope they're having a good look through his stuff including careful examination of his garden. I doubt this was a first offence.

medianewbie · 17/11/2023 20:14

I'm not surprised he is Appealing his sentence. Anything for attention. He will remain a danger for life, imo.

medianewbie · 05/12/2023 14:04

It would be good if his sentence could be increased on Appeal.
I'd be happy for my taxpayers money to fund that, & that only.
