OK, i am conflicted. She is, according to all media, a woman who knew what he had done and covered it up. At the time, I had a hard time with that, because even then I knew about coercive control. This series hasn't helped - it is the male gaze personified. I would love a feminist take on on this backed up by a lot of interview data. So, the question for me is, is she a psychopath or is she a coercively controlled adult woman?,

Interesting thread. I’ve literally started watching it now and I’m on the second episode.

I don’t think she’s a psycho or anything like that. I personally think that he spun her a web of lies and made it seem like it makes sense for Maxine to lie and give him a false alibi. Or maybe she suggested it to make him happy and show that she was in his corner. And by that point it was just too late to turn back.

From the articles I read around the time of this happening, it seems like she was in denial that he could actually have anything to do with their disappearance. I’m sure it’s easier to lie and create a false alibi then to actually think that your partner would be involved with anything like that.

The reason why I don’t think she’s a psycho is because she was visiting her mum when this all happened. Did she actually know that he had killed them and she was covering for him? Only the two of them know the answer to that
