Mermaids on TikTok

If you believe all students deserve to feel safe and supported at school, write to your MP at mermaidsuk.org.uk/schools and ask them to stand up for trans students #SupportiveSchools #Trans #Youth #transkidsdeservetogrowup

Apparently it came after a comment from E Musk on Tuesday

Imagine moving to TikTok for ethical reasons. 😳

BadBadDecisions · 05/10/2023 17:09

Well that's the right platform for spouting a lot of unsubstantiated and unmonitored content to kids.

Surprised they didn't do this years ago.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 05/10/2023 17:09

A children's sex change charity with as many safeguarding scandals as this one (paedophile, staff porn, data breaches etc) shouldn't be on any social media platforms that children can access.

AlisonDonut · 05/10/2023 17:20

I mean, nobody stopped them when they took sweets and puppies to attract kids at, if I remember correctly, PRIDE events.

I predict 'lessons will be learnt' at some point.

Cellotapedispenser · 05/10/2023 17:22

Wondered why I was suddenly seeing more tra stuff on my fyp. There's plenty of GC people on tiktok though who are quite happy to pile on any nonsense like Jeffery Marsh trying to groom kids.

donquixotedelamancha · 05/10/2023 17:39

Awful video. The government is releasing statutory guidance. While that's not primary legislation it's not accurate to say schools can just ignore it.

It's also plain wrong to say there is no law saying schools must inform parents when they change a child's pronons/name. There is data protection and other legislation which makes clear that parents are the owners of info given to schools. You can't legally change a child's name (even nickname) on school systems without parental consent until they are almost 16. Nor can you withold information without a very strong safeguarding rationale.

ResisterRex · 05/10/2023 21:34

The move is going well

Video not there now. Reported? Removed anyway!

Coconutmeg · 06/10/2023 06:38

looks like they’ve taken it down. Just their other 3 videos are still up.

There’s a s/shot of a TikTok notification in the comments on one of the links - the poster reported the video to TikTok who took it down.

worrieddragon · 06/10/2023 10:08

This is a shocking testimony from the US, showing dire consequences for a child, directly caused by hiding transition from parents and viewing 'not affirming' as 'abuse'. https://twitter.com/Jonnywsbell/status/1710002120777150973

They're misrepresenting the legal situation (again), but Mermaids' approach also puts the children they're supposed to care about at massive risk.

Get the kids young. Smart on their part.
