'The first woman to head the judiciary in England and Wales has been sworn in.
Dame Sue Carr, 59, became the first ever Lady Chief Justice, the most senior judge, after taking the oath of office at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
She is the 98th judge to hold the position - and the first woman in a history dating back almost 800 years.'

Congratulations, Dame Sue Carr.

Liz Truss was Lord Chancellor.

NumberTheory · 02/10/2023 19:13

Fantastic! I hadn’t realised that was happening at all.

Liz Truss was Lord Chancellor.

Very very different 😀

This is great! I also kind of love that she's a Susan, which is probably weirded.

StripeySuperNova · 02/10/2023 19:35

And this is why I oppose transgender ideology. There are still firsts for women to achieve and yet we are at a point in history when the first woman to achieve something might be male.

Snowjive2 · 02/10/2023 19:57

She’s not a Susan - she was christened Sue

MissPollysFitDolly · 02/10/2023 20:10

Thank goodness she's a woman, I was half expecting something else!

Well done her, great news.

Same here. I opened the thread in trepidation. Phew. Congratulations Dame Sue!

Yes, I opened the thread in fear of you know what. Congratulations Dame Sue. Can you define a woman, please?

I have had to NC for this, for obvious reasons. I am not in any doubt that she knows the answer to this. I think you’d be pleasantly surprised.

On a related topic yesterday evening I attended a talk at Sue’s Inn of Court by Michael Beloff KC, impossibly eminent retired sports lawyer. He blew my socks off by spending a good part of the talk speaking about males in women’s sports and he came down clearly and explicitly against it. He said the science was overwhelming and giving TW a free pass went against a hundred years of practice for every other category, where old people, heavier people etc were not allowed to compete against others over whom they had an advantage. The audience was reduced to a stunned silence. The students were horrified and I think everyone over 40 was thinking “I cannot believe you had the balls to go there.” Beloff then said, “apart from my passion for sports law I have spent my entire professional life defending free speech. I have spoken on this issue before and people have said not only should I not have spoken about it, I should not have been allowed to speak on any subject. Well, I’m not having that.”

@NamechangeforLCJ I think he’s missing his “so there!” But seriously, he sounds fabulous. I will go to youtube later and see if I can find anything to listen to.

Thanks for the reference.

Well it's a relief that she is a biological woman - but is she a sister and will she be able to do anything about a system that allows a convicted criminal to incite violence against women and be acquitted.

The law is an ass, the judiciary appear mysogynist and it would be good to see some change.
