It's that time if year when I have to click through the utter tedium of CPD courses.

I was not hopeful after the last time I did it. I think it got worse. Only passing mention of sexism issues (and part of that saying men can be sexually harassed....true but wasn't very balanced). There were pages about trans issues.

Pretty sure what they are training thousands of employees with is incorrect.

"Everyone has pronouns based on their gender identity. It is not possible to know someone's gender identity so we shouldn't make assumptions about a person's pronouns from their appearance, voice, or characteristics."

Yep, don't agree. Not everyone does.

And worse.....

"Trans and non-binary staff often face particular challenges with changing personal details on institutional records, confusion over use of single sex toilets/changing facilities appropriate for their affirmed gender (it is in fact legal for people to use whichever facility they feel most comfortable with), and misunderstandings of the duties imposed on Universities by the presentation of a Gender Recognition Certificate."

They talked about conflicting views elsewhere but this is bit is just misleading isn't it? I thought I knew the law but even I'm starting to get confused!

It is so frustrating when you know lots of colleagues are being intentionally mislead.

it is in fact legal for people to use whichever facility they feel most comfortable with

It's legal for organizations to provide actual single-sex facilities where “the service is provided for, or is likely to be used by, two or more persons at the same time, and the circumstances are such that a person of one sex might reasonably object to the presence of a person of the opposite sex”.

peppermintteadrinker · 02/10/2023 13:50

So it is legal for employers to provide single sex facilities but not illegal for them to say people of another sex can use them if they want to? Is that correct?

Not providing female employees with toilet facilities that they can access is direct sex discrimination. And we know it's a fact that many women cannot use mixed sex. So allowing people to self ID into women's loos is direct sex discrimination and also religious discrimination too.

dimorphism · 02/10/2023 13:54

If both sexes can use them they're not single sex whatever they might be called on the toilet door. In fact, calling them single sex and them not being single sex is worse, because it's deception.

YewTree84 · 02/10/2023 13:55

It's a sick world.

Thank the lord I stepped off the corporate wheel because that stuff was intolerable then, I imagine it's far worse now.

It's complete nonsense and the chances of this ever being an issue is so remote.

peppermintteadrinker · 02/10/2023 13:56

@YewTree84 why do you say it's remote?

I just mean, all this nonsense is rammed down our throats. Gender neutral toilets or whatever...what for? I've never met a trans person. The way they go on about it, you'd imagine they're everywhere.

The chances of you coming across a bloke in women's toilets is remote I would say, however I would not be happy. Disgusting.

peppermintteadrinker · 02/10/2023 14:09

Oh I see. In universities it is probably a bit different. There are a lot of students who identify as a different gender and I have experienced this quite regularly, even at conferences in my subject area.

We have gender neutral toilets but the training and trans policy says trans students may choose whichever they like.

I'd welcome an asteroid hitting earth right about now 🤣

peppermintteadrinker · 02/10/2023 17:56

@YewTree84 😆🫣 yeah on many levels I'm beginning to agree.

Definitely wrong.

Nobody presents a GRC. Do they mean 'posession'?
