London-based four-piece Dream Nails are casting soulful punk hexes on the patriarchy. Don't like it? Frankly, they don't care...

There’s nothing subtle about self-proclaimed, London-based ‘punk witches’ Dream Nails. They come armed with a fierce feminist manifesto, soulful punk jams and a completely unapologetic ‘no fucks given’ attitude. They're coming to challenge your privilege and they don’t want your approval – in fact, they want you to change. Unified through feminist activism, since 2015, their ‘witch punk’ has been harnessing “the tenacious and divine power of a global sisterhood of women and non-binary people who are taking matters into their own hands.”

Global sisterhood? They are using a gendered term? Misgendering...

CorruptedCauldron · 15/09/2023 12:02

Punk was about challenging the Establishment. This lot ARE the Establishment. Crapping on gender-critical women from a great height is safe, trendy, approved and applauded.

RealityFan · 15/09/2023 12:07

"Witch punks"?
More like, which punks? Because their take is as far from punk tear the establishment down ethos as you can get.

Jesus, they sound tedious.

MargotBamborough · 15/09/2023 12:16

So much for the BBC being politically neutral.

PorcelinaV · 15/09/2023 00:20

So their gender isn't anyone else's business, but everyone needs to remember their pronouns. If they just kept it to themselves then no one would fucking care.

Replace 'Terfs' with ANY other minority group of people in that song and imagine the reaction.

Having said that, these girls have cottoned on to a pretty cunning playbook:

  1. Be a thoroughly mediocre punk band with limited musical skills
  2. Wear traditionally sexy female punk/goth clothing...
  3. BUT...be non-binary and insist you are not female
  4. Have your bassist grow a T-assisted tache
  5. ?????
  6. PROFIT

How very capitalist and enterprising of them. I'm off to stream Babes in Toyland.

Is there a 'tasche there? I really should be more observant in these, um, fluid times.

SamW98 · 15/09/2023 12:33

Soulful - seriously??

I made the mistake of checking out google images.

Someone should really tell them that Le Tigre did the whole 'enby girl with a tache thing' in 2011. And they weren't that good either.

I really want 1992 era Donita Sparks to return and tell these idiots some home truths

Bit disappointed that Steve Lamacq played this. I'm not sure about whether we should be banning songs that incite violence - where would that leave the classic 'Die Yuppie Die!' by Painters and Dockers, or even Panic ("Kill the DJ...")

ArabeIIaScott · 15/09/2023 12:49

It's all very surface. Very glib. Fluffy bleurgh.

Even punk needs a bit of nuance and layers. A bit of bite.

I will refrain from my rant of why so much contemporary culture is very very weak, even notwithstanding Sturgeon's law.

Dramatico · 15/09/2023 12:51

If I want good punk I'll listen to Nova Twins

WarriorN · 15/09/2023 12:55

Was this a way by the bbc 6 music lot to indirectly support mermaids? Or directly actually? 🧐

Seeing them supporting Muse later this year! Can't wait!

That's not how radio royalties work. The BBC pays the PRS and PPL for a blanket radio licence and the PRS and PPL distribute to record companies, performers and songwriters via an arcane formula that frankly no-one understands.

WarriorN · 15/09/2023 13:05

Ah ok.

Abhannmor · 15/09/2023 13:17

Well I think you're all being rotten. Luckily, Dream Nails could give a crap what y'all think !
They are feisty and fearless

So looking forward to their new choon about Islam.

MelodiousThunk · 15/09/2023 13:19

@WarriorN you basically get a cheque (or two if you are both songwriter and performer so one from PRS and one from PPL) once a quarter for a completely random amount. In theory it's around £20 per minute of airplay so a 3 minute single played once will have resulted in £60 divided up between the record company, the songwriter(s), the performer(s) - and of course the PPL and PRS taking their generous scrap off the top. In reality, it's "oooh, I got a cheque for £12.32 I can pack in the day job now!"
