So what are your silver linings in the gender wars?

In the interests of balance, what have the upsides of the gender wars been for you?

For me:

  • Introduced me to highly engaging and thought-provoking thinkers, writers and podcasters
  • Got me reading far more widely than I was when I was in my comfy groove
  • Made me think much more critically and check my assumptions in all aspects of my life
  • Showed me what a collective force women can be and how we tackle significant problems with creativity, wit and good humour
  • Róisín Murphy! How could I have missed such a bright talent?

There’s so much more but that’ll do for now. Happy Thursday!

Thankful I didn’t have kids especially girls.

I met Graham Linehan, he's huge!

Also a wonderful lady gave me a suffragette penny.

It's given my mum, sister and me a common cause and a new respect for each other.

Oh The Times writers are basically my family now. I buy it proudly and consider it my home.

I'm very ordinary but it's caused me to do something which has turned out to be important and to have made a difference.

Finally disabused me of any notions that the BBC was impartial. Tbh I have given up most mainstream media. Gained lots of podcasts etc. I already liked graham linehan, but proper fangirl now. To the pp who has never watched father Ted, wtf! Watch it, so funny.

Realising there are many people that dislike that twat OJ as much as I do.

Finally “getting” Twitter.

Oh another thing. Due to a relative going into the Lib Democrats at quite a high level, I'm fully aware that all political parties are battling internally about this, whether they admit it or not. That does give me comfort (though I am also angry that there are so many groups of women operating under really amazing levels of security, in the UK, for talking about women's rights).

A silver lining for me has also been the positive outcomes of the strange, carefully worded conversations which reveal women who also believe that women should have rights. Those kindred spirits who say 'can you believe....!'

I bloody love those. Even the wee pauses. But especially the smiles. 😊

For me it's the women I've met along the way. The most incredible warrior women who I hope will be friends for life.
Also it's shaken me out of lazy tribalism. I was guilty of just accepting arguments because they were from the left or from someone I respected. I've learned to think more critically and not to blindly agree with something just others I respect do.
