What are your thoughts on Repeal the GRA?

EasternStandard · 12/09/2023 13:35

I haven’t given it a huge amount of thought but a pp on another thread raised it, which I found interesting

How do you feel about it? Is it something that should be considered

Yes, it should be repealed. The 'legal fiction' at its heart is damaging to woman and children, and is unnecessary and pointless.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 12/09/2023 13:53

No one should be allowed to alter birth certificates or other legal documents to pretend they are the opposite sex.

Rightsraptor · 12/09/2023 13:55

It should be repealed. It was intended to help a tiny number of people marry, regularise their pensions etc. Now it's used by men who want everything for themselves.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 12/09/2023 13:59

Should be repealed

the reasons it was brought in are no longer issues and it is leading to a great deal of harm

I’m all for women being able to ditch makeup and men being allowed to wear frocks without any repercussions, but the EA takes care of that

really can’t see what the GRA brings to the party except trouble

ditalini · 12/09/2023 13:59

Of course it should be. It's of no use to anyone, including the group that it was designed to support.

Its only purpose is to allow some people to falsify their birth certificate which is patently ludicrous.

If people need a birth certificate without a sex marker on it, it should be easily achievable, probably without legislation, for one to be made available to order. Ditto with death certificates.

Yes exactly, as soon as gay marriage became legal it was superfluous.

Interestingly, I read before that the GRA contains only a few exemptions - women cannot identify into primogeniture, and women cannot identify into becoming priests.
So they knew exactly what they were doing, ensuring that women could not identify into privileged positions.

AlisonDonut · 12/09/2023 14:06

It was bad law in the first place.

It should be repealed.

ResisterRex · 12/09/2023 14:19

Repeal. But my worry is what batshit alternative Labour would replace it with. Better to remove the secrecy and lies from the GRA, make clear none of it applies to under 18s, and clarify that natal sex means natal sex regardless of having a GRC.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/09/2023 15:24

It should be repealed. I don't see any political party with an appetite to do it though. There was a Government petition that garnered the necessary numbers of signatures for a reply, but nowhere near enough for a debate. The reply made it clear they had no intention of doing anything with it.

terryleather · 12/09/2023 15:28

Repeal.

It should never have become law in the first place.

PriOn1 · 12/09/2023 15:36

It should be repealed. They could probably include a grandfather clause though, for those who’ve already legally changed their sex markers on everything.

EasternStandard · 12/09/2023 15:49

It is legal fiction

I can’t believe it’s swept so many countries

OP posts:
WallaceinAnderland · 12/09/2023 15:53

It should be repealed. It was brought in under the radar without consultation with those affected by it. Women and girls are still entitled to privacy from male bodies even if they have a piece of paper with F written on it. Also it's a lie. They are not female.

Woman2023 · 12/09/2023 15:55

Repeal. But my worry is what batshit alternative Labour would replace it with.

It should just be repealed, no replacement. It's completely unnecessary.

duc748 · 12/09/2023 15:56

And perhaps the fact that it's 'in so many countries' would be given as a reason why it can't be repealed. But it should be, of course it should, but realistically, it's not going to happen, is it?

EasternStandard · 12/09/2023 15:59

It would resolve the single sex space issue

How can we not run into clashes when there’s a legal sex certificate

And in pp one issue is the international take on this. If the majority of the populace don’t want to have this fallacy what then?

OP posts:
IWillNoLie · 12/09/2023 16:00

Definitely must be repealed.

dcbc1234 · 12/09/2023 16:06

It hasn't had the limited impact we were all reassured about when it was introduced quietly to help 'transexuals' in 2004. Instead the worst has happened at the hands of various bad faith actors/'charities' and bandwagon jumpers; and the simplest solution would be to repeal it fully and to amend the Equality Act 2010 for sex to mean biological sex only (=what was always intended at the time hence not spelt out).

https://www.repealthegra.org/

It's a sexist law and I don't think we should have sexism enshrined in law.

Agree. Otherwise a TiF would be able to inherit a peerage. Repeal it.

Jux · 12/09/2023 16:10

Yes, it didn't really occur to any of them that trans would take the shape it has. It's become a massive monster.

Repeal repeal repeal.

Datun · 12/09/2023 16:12

Of course it should be repealed. How could a civilised and democratic society ever have enshrined the legal definition of a woman to be a concept available to any man. On their whim.

And as other people have said, they very carefully made sure it didn't apply to inheritance, a seat in the Lords or the priesthood.

Oh no, you can't have pesky women gaining any kind of advantage! That's only allowed for rapists, male chancers, perverts and sports cheats.

The sexism is breathtaking.

The only people who benefit from this law are men. You don't see women, with GRCs, clamouring to get into male prisons, do you? Or beating men at sport?

It's a horrible, misogynistic law. And should never have been allowed.

duc748 · 12/09/2023 16:13

You can imagine the howls of "You're trying to erase us!", though. Which politicians are shit-scared of.
