It's the Guardian. Absolutely every single thing that is reviewed in their Culture section is assessed according to the values of their puritanical identity politics rather than by any artistic merit it might have.

In my experience, they also assess male musicians according to warped id politics metrics.

Not actual bad stuff, to be clear, but if they tick the right boxes they are unlikely to get a bad review, even if it's shallow derivative shit.

The review is strangely written. Its sections on the music itself are full of verbal flourishes, but the part attacking Murphy's political views is leaden and plain. Snapes clearly loves the album, and maybe spent a long time crafting a response to it - then had to tack on this diatribe before the article went to press.

I am not a fan of this type of enraged article even if I agree on principle.

I agree the original review is very odd and it also misses the point. The painful contradiction of wanting a fantasy and coming to accept your authentic self seems completely in alignment with RM's recently publicised comments. It seems like she knows what she's talking about.

I got that sense too. The review may have been written some weeks ago when preview copies were sent out and then some quick updating was required/demanded.

I love Roisin (and her point of view) but not the album at all. On the back of all the fuss had a good listen.

I still have time for her earlier stuff just not this. Missing the point I know.

According to The Guardian, that's not been confirmed. The ultimate in holier than thou cancel culture: say you're going to do something but don't actually do it. The shock is that Roisin Murphy's comments aren't even particularly controversial. The manufacturers of puberty blockers must be delighted that they have so many supporters who don't even bother with checking the evidence.

No, that was a lie by either a "journalist" or their source. Confirmed by Róisín Murphy herself in a quote posted by @WarriorN on page 30 of the other thread here.

Her music's not really my sort of thing, but I've listened to the new album as a tiny resistance to the witch hunt. I cancelled my subscription to the Grauniad when Hadley Freeman left, otherwise I'd be doing that too.
