John Boyne
I've spent the last few days reflecting on Graham Linehan @Glinner's comments about me, and I think it's worth responding.

(Sorry only graphic of text on Xtwitter)

Daily Mail has a story about this. Apparently he was peaked by what happened to Róisín Murphy

(And the DM story has the apology in an accessible format)

Boy in Striped Pyjamas author John Boyne apologises to Graham Linehan

Irish author John Boyne appears to have buried the hatchet with anti-gender ideology campaigner Graham Linehan and praised the latter's efforts to support women and children.

can you summarise what was said rather than just attaching links please? I wouldn't click on those, even if I could.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 06/09/2023 08:02

Why can’t you click on the links? Why wouldn’t you?

There is a thoughtful and gracious apology from John Boyne and then from Graham Linehan an acceptance and admission that he said things to Boyne in anger which cannot have made it easy to apologise.

Boyne sees what has happened to Róisín Murphy and feels that he may have contributed to the same happening to Graham Linehan at a difficult time in his life and with major consequences for Graham.

There's another thread about this Sidslaw with plenty of screenshots which also include Graham Linehan's response:

Sorry didn't realise there was an existing thread. And quite honestly I wanted a title on FWR that made if clear Glinner has been acknowledged.

One of the powers of FWR is to get a title that makes the issue clear, as google always picks up these titles and ranks them quite highly.

So may even start another thread with the title:

How soon before more people apologise to Graham Linehan?

Smile

I think this is a massive deal. Such a public acknowledgement that he has changed his mind, alongside the apology to Linehan. It paves the way for other people to bravely admit they have rethought the issue.

BonfireLady · 06/09/2023 21:07

@IwantToRetire I was also thinking the same about who will be next.
I'm very much looking forward to Ian Hislop's dropping in a little further down the line. His patronising response to Glinner that "it's not as important as people think" is going to come back and haunt him, given everything Glinner has been through and lost. Why would anyone do that if it wasn't important?

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 06/09/2023 21:17

I look forward to the day when Glinner can actually get back to writing brilliant comedies. There are many, many injustices in his story and I hope one day someone (maybe himself) writes a fucking brilliant biopic about this. Because I really want him to be vindicated by everyone who ever said a bad word about him.

I can't say "I want him to get back to doing what he does best." He has an incredible talent for screenwriting but he is also an outstanding voice fighting in the corner for natal women everywhere and holding the line against innumerable bastards who change faces and online accounts at the drop of a hat and have effectively taken away everything from him.

I hope he knows his life's narrative arc isn't a fall, it's a fall and rise. And he's already rising. For some of us, he never fell, everyone else did and they tried to drag him down with them.

The LEAST any of them can do is offer him an apology. They should be giving him money to compensate for his loss of earnings and making reparations to cultural funds for the terrible losses to British and Irish culture from the fact he's been blacklisted by this mob.

Apart from the usual, ie Times, Telegraph this apology hasn't had much coverage in the main stream media, but have just seen that Sky News has reported. https://news.sky.com/story/author-john-boyne-apologises-to-father-ted-writer-graham-linehan-for-criticism-over-trans-issues-you-were-right-i-was-wrong-12955951

Author John Boyne apologises to Father Ted writer Graham Linehan for criticism over trans issues: 'You were right, I was wrong'

Following previous criticism of each other, The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas author John Boyne has now said sorry to TV writer Graham Linehan. It comes after a backlash against singer Roisin Murphy over comments she made about puberty blockers.

It’s a beautifully worded apology. I hope a few more follow suit…and quickly.
Let’s get Father Ted the musical made!

Two Irish men meet up for drinks and it makes the papers:

Well meet up and are prepared to be "outed" for it!

Some of the comments, which I haven't seen before, which people made about the apology are just silly, well not silly as know this is how and why too many stay silence.

Or aren't brave enough to say I was mistaken.

Great photo - glad Glinner's gained an ally (other than us lot) and hope his book gains him many more.

Rightsraptor · 19/09/2023 17:58

And the Irish Independent (is it?) calls KJK an 'anti trans campaigner'. Of course they do.

And the Irish Independent (is it?) calls KJK an 'anti trans campaigner'. Of course they do.

At least they put 'anti trans' in quotes. Another Independent article on the Let Women Speak event said: "Critics of Parker have labelled her ‘anti-trans’. She has described herself in interviews as a “women’s rights activist”." Contrast that with this Newstalk report: Hundreds gather for rival protests over trans rights in Dublin city.

Almost all of the supposed reporting of the LWS event and the protest was disgracefully biased and one-sided.
