There’s a long article on bbc news about a transgender cricketer (from Canada) about to play in women’s international T20 cricket. It’s a pretty good article. It’s not leading with the angle of criticising her, but it’s also not leading with how wonderful it is. It describes what is happening, mentions how this is in contrast to what many other sports are doing, follows that up with a good explanation of why those sports are doing that. It includes lots of quotes all round including from hee, but I think gives a pretty clear picture for readers, and sets them up to know what to look out for. And for anyone at all familiar with the topic there’s a lot clear but unsaid. Imagine there will be more on this later. Feels very different to an article we might have had a year ago.

strike rate 184? I think that means he scores 1.84 runs per ball faced? for reference that makes him more dominant than the current fastest scorer in the men's ipl, whose strike rate of 174 is here described as "staggering".

puffyisgood · 31/08/2023 10:08

the highest average strike rate in men's international one day cricket is 130- something. so, yeah, it sounds like this fella is really making hay.

I have just read the article in the Telegraph and came on here to post. Is this the first time a TW has got into a women's side?

Exactly my thought too, but I’m quite surprised there was one showing McGahey with women, even scrunched down. There was a great Twitter thread a while ago about the poor lonely athletes who just want to compete, very amusingly/engagingly illustrated with photos of them alone, gazing mournfully into the distance. The woman who compiled it had found some brilliant shots and her commentary was spot on.

Ah, that's probably because everyone is cool with it. None of the women mind. Not one. And we know that for an absolute fact because McGahey tells us:

"McGahey said she had not encountered any animosity from either team-mates or opponents since she started playing women's cricket.
"I can't recall a single negative experience, particularly on the field or off the field with my team. Everyone has been incredibly supportive," McGahey said."

The feelings of the woman who now will not represent her country because of this male muscling in on the team are presumably not recorded or recalled. As are the real feelings of the other women, probably.

A man on a women's team. Just wrong.

Gah, I didn’t get to my post in time to edit the autocorrect. It should have read ‘amusingly/enragingly’ - not ‘engagingly’. There nothing engaging about a woman being kept out of her sport by a cheater.

EdithStourton · 31/08/2023 10:25

So women already have fewer opportunities to play sports on international teams, but let's just hand a slot over to a bloke.

Fuck sake. I was done with shit some years ago. I am now entering a phase of unproductive incoherent rage.

puffyisgood · 31/08/2023 10:32

it's kind of a tradition in men's international cricket than many of the players representing the lesser nations (I include England within this) won't, strictly speaking, be of that nationality, not Danielle takes that tradition to the next level by representing Canada ladies despite being neither Canadian nor a lady, rather a big strapping Aussie bloke.

imed · 31/08/2023 10:44

What the fuck has happened to that beautiful country?

He’s a cheating man, and so the Canadian team is also cheating.

Helleofabore · 31/08/2023 11:07

The ICC has to step in. There is absolutely no evidence that this would be fair. I come from a family of cricketers and this seems to be an outrageous and egregious lack of responsibility. The danger of that male individual hitting a lighter ball with a lighter bat with players closer in is very dangerous.

Binglebong · 31/08/2023 11:09

Clearly no respect for male teammates either-they were all doing a serious team photo while the subject of the discussion was messing around throwing Vs.

DiabolicalFinial · 31/08/2023 11:13

All that is needed is the head tilt - it’s there, so all is good.

Seriously, though, when someone (be it a player or crowd member) is injured by this male - we know who is to blame.

CaveMum · 31/08/2023 11:16

A surprisingly balanced article from the BBC. How times have changed!

PaperWalkAndTalk · 31/08/2023 11:23

Does anyone else get annoyed with all the talk from these sportsmen who say "people have studied my performances, and they have now dropped so much that I can be considered a woman".

The BBC and everyone is happy to report that trans identified males are now at such a lower level of sporting ability that they can be women, whilst at the women's World Cup they were claiming that the sporting ability between male and female footballers was the same.

Basically the BBC and everyone else just can't report on women's sport properly.

right, so most players in Canada are of recent South Asian descent? unsurprising. I wonder whether there are any 'cultural' issues there in terms of Danielle's assimilation within the female player base?

334bu · 31/08/2023 11:30

Interesting in video to see trans athlete beside women players and to see the difference in physique. A bit like Emily Bridges when photographed with the winning men's university team just a couple of weeks before being banned from competing against elite women. Difficult to distinguish the transwoman fromthe other over 6 feet men.

@Morty12 no ‘máxine’ Blythe played for Kent though now seems to be no longer there

https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/11870243/maxine-blythin-transgender-cricketer-reveals-birth-condition

How sad though that Blythe set women's records while in that team!

And didn't Blythe win women player of the year? And was lauded by Clare Balding for being that amazing woman player...

SabrinaThwaite · 31/08/2023 08:46

Thanks for sharing that video. There's no denying Danielle is all male when watching that. The physicality, movement, all male.

It also clearly shows that Danielle wouldn't get near representing his country in the men's team.

Bunpea · 31/08/2023 11:58

Indeed.
