Could failing to acknowledge Women's Rights Bankrupt the Green Party?

https://bylinetimes.com/2023/08/29/green-party-at-risk-of-going-bust-amid-trans-rights-row-legal-challenge-from-former-deputy-leader/

A shadow hangs over the future of the Green Party of England and Wales, as the party’s official financial accounts suggest a legal challenge from a former deputy leader could bring the organisation down as a “going concern”.

The latest accounts from the Greens, filed with the Electoral Commission, reveal a warning from auditors that a “material uncertainty exists regarding legal claims” as to whether the party will continue to remain financially afloat.

Byline Times has learnt that this uncertainty revolves around impending legal claims from several gender critical activists – including former deputy leader Shahrar Ali, who is suing the party over alleged discrimination based on his views about gender and sex.

More in the article.

The Lib Dems should be taking notes.

Green Party At Risk of Going Bust Amid Trans Rights Row Legal Challenge from Former Deputy Leader – Byline Times

The party's accounts suggest there is "significant doubt" about whether it can continue as a "going concern" due to a series of legal challenges.

I used to vote Green and campaigned in my own small way as I have a long held and firm belief in protecting our environment. However, the Green Party has completely lost it's way and I would raise a glass to see it's downfall in it's current guise. hopefully then it could rebuild itself and once again concentrate on the environment.

Ps. does anyone else think it odd/ironic that the emblem of environmental issues from the 70's/80's the rainbow (eg Rainbow Warrior the Greenpeace boat) is now an emblem of the TRAs? If you mentioned Rainbow Warrior now they'd probably imagine a blue haired TRA or a Drag Queen 😂

stealtheatingtunnocks · 29/08/2023 17:39

It would certainly solve a problem if the parties who refuse to listen to experts or the electorate were bankrupted by their own hubris.

MN could step into the gap, I’m sure

Interesting implications for sure. The article is only a partial account which doesn't report any of the outrageous details of the way Shahrar was treated which came out last week. It is pretty clear that leading members of the party are bigoted towards people who know sex exists. Notice the summary of the other cases make no mention of the way the Greens targeted Dawn for exposing the horrific Challenor case.

If you read the thread on the case which has links to the Tribunal tweets summaries you will see the GPEW's position is full of holes. They may win on technicalities, I can't say, but it is very clear Shahrar and others were targeted because he knew biological sex exists :

Their claims they were willing to settle seem disingenuous.

Hoping that Shahrar wins in October and the others do as well. If the Greens bankrupt themselves because they want to be bigots well it is their choice.

There is a far better parallel to be drawn. GPEW decided to follow the same route as the BNP in 2010 taking on an expensive court case because they want to justify biogtry. Political parties in the UK cannot be sexist any more than they can be racist. They have to follow the Equality act:

That article could have done with an editor's hand all over it. I see its author is a 'chief reporter' for the BT - but we all benefit from an editor.

Oh yes. It’s really sad to see the rainbow used as a symbol of misogyny.

If a GE were called, it's going to cause issues for the greens.

Each candidate has to put down a deposit. If they don't get 5% of the vote they lose the deposit. The deposit is £500

There are currently 543 constituencies in England and 32 in Wales. (This may be reduced is the electoral boundaries come in before the GE). That's 575 X 500 or £287,500 to stand in each constituency on top of the normal running costs they are saying they can't afford and before you add in their party political broadcasts and any costs of other promotional material.

This says they simply won't be able to stand in any constituency they are at risk of losing their deposit.

Remember the next GE has to be before end of Jan 2025. So it's now an inevitability imho. They don't have the time to raise that much from their base.

This in itself has ramifications. It's likely to mean there's a 2 - 4% vote share that can't vote green in many constituencies. That will probably go Labour or LD way instead.

However if there is significant cost to the greens for shafting those with gender critical views, the Lads in particular can't afford a similar case. The Labour piggie bank isn't in the best shape either.

The cynic in me wonders whether this is the real reason for the recent labour 'shift in policy' - the legal and financial exposure that twaw brings.

Well, it's a damn shame what's happened to the Green Party.

Dismantled over genderwhang.

SNP also looking incredibly shoogly these days.

Oh my days, I haven't heard the word shoogly for a very very long time.
Love the word, will now use it in conversation until I forget it again.

As for the green party, oh dear, how sad, never mind. Don't let the door hit you etc etc.

ArabeIIaScott · 29/08/2023 21:00

But how can one live without 'shoogly'? It's an essential word!

RealityFan · 29/08/2023 21:12

What is this rubbish from a Green spokes-They/Them that Ali winning would mean the Tories couldn't bar entry in effect a Marxist Socialist

Do these people even understand the basics of protected attitudes?

TheGreatATuin · 29/08/2023 21:21

There are still a lot of good people in the Greens, especially at local level. I think it will be a huge shame if the entire party is brought down by a relatively small group of deeply unpleasant zealots who have managed to take over key positions.
My hope is that this will force ordinary Greens to be a little more aware of whats going on at higher levels, gain a little fury and vote out the idiots so we can get on with focusing on the environment.

ScottishIceCream · 29/08/2023 21:22

As a long time Green Party supporter, it pains me to say it would serve them right.

I haven't voted for them since gender woo took grip and it seemed like the environment became a secondary issue.

You are very wise.
I shall try to remember shoogly and use it for the rest of my time on this earth.

LadyMadderLake · 29/08/2023 21:41

Oh no! Pesky material reality!

It's really an achievement to fail so badly on actual green issues and fail to be a flourishing environmental party, at a time when more and more people are waking up to the issues and trying to do something, and green opposition is vital.

Crouton19 · 29/08/2023 21:52

Indeed, their time could not be more 'now' and yet they are so tangled up in identitarian bollocks they don't stand much chance of unifying the country against climate change.
