Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Even the deep sea has been "queered"

R4, Animal: Shapeshifters on this afternoon (Tues) at 1.45pm.

I love the underwater world, was an avid diver in my past. Apparently we can't refer to the deep sea (in which nobody is diving) as "alien" because it's part of earth and there are no aliens on earth and it's "othering". I'm going to go out on an unfishy-limb and hazard a guess that nobody and nothing in the deep sea world gives a shite about what we call them. I think they'd just like us to stop polluting the seas.

Apparently too the world is divided into queer people and those in power.

And the sea is a queer space.

All this in a 15 minute radio programme that I didn't quite reach the end of as I had to leave at 2pm.

I'm finding more and more that the queer movement is doing what I did in GCSE English when I pinned a theme on everything I could in the book we were studying. Their theme is "queerness". It's boring now. I'm sure I could pin queerness on a meaty shepherd's pie if I could be bothered.

According to the logic of this programme's contributor, gay men in positions of power aren't queer. Meanwhile I'd argue that if the national broadcaster, that broadcasts globally thanks to its app, has you on the airwaves, then you'd be privileged and in a position of power. Which would, according to her own logic, render most of the listeners queerer than her!

Can someone notify the driver, I want to get off the nonsense bus!

Haha... Do you know the US government refers to non US citizens as aliens???

Let me know when you find the driver, I'll get off at the next stop too

Shepherds pie, it's probably a sheep kink fetish 😳 niche reddit thread.

RebelliousCow · 29/08/2023 15:17

Yes, I heard that...and immediately turned off the radio once the ocean had been referred to as a "queer space".

Radio 4 increasingly features american commentators and voices.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/08/2023 15:20

We had the obligatory sea creatures changing sex bit.

Speaker was trans.

I really was not paying attention.

TheHappyCarrot · 29/08/2023 15:22

What a load of old tosh Radio 4 is spewing these days.

nauticant · 29/08/2023 16:38

Sabrina Imbler. Started as a lesbian, then became queer, and is now trans. Sounds like a 16 year old lad on a mild dose of helium.

Unsurprising to see this: Producer and Sound Designer: Arlie Adlington

Some sea creatures deffo seem to fit the definition of queer, by the old standard (‘strange, odd’).

Having momentarily gotten quite interested in the deep submersible community after the Titan tragedy, it seems to me to be a very macho sort of world. Maybe it’s only the ultra deep sea that is so cisheteronormative? 😬

I can’t for the life of me understand why ‘alien’ (‘belonging to a foreign country’) is insulting but ‘queer’ is not.

I've been to the bottom of the sea (at 2000 m) and the very last thing on my mind was to look for "queerness". I was way too busy being utterly amazed by what I saw through the porthole while operating various bits of equipment and writing the dive log.

Its posts like this that remind me why I spend so much (far too much) time on Mumsnet. You’re a fascinating bunch.

And the sea is a queer space

oh ffs WHAT BOLLOCKS.

Agree op, it’s like a dodgy teenage English essay where you try to wrestle together some woefully unrelated concepts in the hope of looking clever and distracting attention from the face you haven’t a clue/didn’t read it (we’ve all been there…)

Eventually everything will be so blimming tiresomely queer that being queer won’t be special enough and they’ll have to unqueer themselves for attention.

LadyMadderLake · 29/08/2023 20:32

And yes some sea creatures do change sex. How do we know? By their functional sex. Not by their dresses, lippy, heels or wigs, or by their self-I’d claims either.

To be fair the the ocean depths are increasingly queer because Queer corporate power is littering the oceans with human junk. The world's biggest plastic polluters are have queer products produced by queer staff in queer factories. Queerness is consumerism, one look at any Pride day tells you that:

World's top plastic polluters Coca Cola, Nestle, Pepsi:

Or is corporate pride not queer suddenly?

Brilliant!

Had to laugh! I changed "barely anybody dives in" to "in echo h nobody is diving" aware I was running the risk of someone pointing out that some people do dive to. I was about 99.999% certain that nobody reading would actually have done it! And I was wrong! I'm very impressed you've been that deep. I'm not quite jealous because it's too deep for me by about 1970 metres!
