https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/23728722.playwright-david-greig-apologises-row-tweets/

'ONE of Scotland’s most high-profile playwrights has apologised to staff at the Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh for “careless and harmful” Twitter actions.
David Greig’s apology came after another writer accused him of favouriting tweets she alleged were transphobic.
Mr Greig, who has been the theatre’s artistic director since 2015, said he could not remember clicking the like button on the two social media messages but that he accepted that he had.

...

Rosie Aspinall Priest, an artist and researcher, shared the two liked tweets, alleging that Mr Greig was “openly liking transphobic tweets.”
“Really awful things on display here that do not align with the values inherent within Scotland’s theatre sector,” she said.
Soon after Mr Greig deleted his account.'

My challenge to you today, readers of FWR, and especially wims in Scotland, is to read that article <without> the creeping sense that you are living in the pages a dystopian novel.

Good luck.

Definitely a dystopian novel. What is transphobic about suggesting a man hitting a woman twice is more worthy of arrest than an autistic girl saying a policewoman looks like her gay grandmother (which I would think was meant as as complement?). The lads and lasses fighting gender nonsense is not transphobic either, it is supporting women and girls' rights, only misogynists would think this is transphobic and the woman suggesting it is transphobic is clearly one of those.

Grammarnut · 18/08/2023 11:25

So cross forgot to be a grammarnut.

Abhannmor · 18/08/2023 11:28

So Rosie Aspinall Priest ( how aptly named ) has got her way and forced a Confession out of a blameless man. Much good it will do her though. The end is nigh for the Church of the Poisoned Mind. A religion lacking all compassion.

RealityFan · 18/08/2023 11:36

Imagine having to recant for a Tweet where you agreed with criticising Sarah Jane Baker.

I mean, how do you look in the mirror and live with yourself that you basically caved?

Because we all know that these are all ISIS hostage style apologies.

Not in fear of their physical life. But of their work, friends, colleagues.

Back in the day I read about the McCarthy witchhunts and Salem witch trials.

These incidences are the modern day equivalent.

The difference now being that people: speak/write/Tweet, then self censor, then fall on their sword.

Don't even need a courtroom for trial by witchfinder. People now hang themselves.

What an absolute clown show/car crash.

TangledRoots · 18/08/2023 11:38

It is so ridiculous that people would trawl through someone’s ‘liked’ tweets to find things to be offended by. It’s an addiction to feeling injured.

Saltysamphire · 18/08/2023 11:49

Saw this. DH knows David Grieg and said he has lost all respect for him. He won’t be the only one. When,

RealityFan · 18/08/2023 11:53

He's seen Glinner's fate and thought he doesn't want any of that.

Saltysamphire · 18/08/2023 11:53

Sorry pressed send too soon!

WHEN will these people learn that the ONLY way to deal with these utterly psychotic cry bullies like Priest is to completely ignore them? They will circle you for a while like sharks around a wounded animal but if you don’t engage they eventually get bored, lick their woke chops and move on to the next target.

By capitulating and grovelling DG will not be forgiven by the TRAs - his card is marked now - he’s also totally lost respect and damaged his reputation amongst those who despise cancel culture, which is most of the general public. Very silly man.

LoobiJee · 18/08/2023 11:58

“One read: “Lads and lasses in the trenches fighting the gender madness - what is the best (very recent) example you can think of that shows how we have won this crazy war?”
^^
The other referred to two recent high-profile but separate cases involving the police. It read: “If you are a 16-year-old autistic girl who says someone looks like a lesbian you will be arrested and held in custody, but if you are a 26-year-old man who punches a woman twice at a women's rights rally, you will just be cautioned.”

Rosie Aspinall Priest, an artist and researcher, shared the two liked tweets, alleging that Mr Greig was “openly liking transphobic tweets.”
^^
“Really awful things on display here that do not align with the values inherent within Scotland’s theatre sector,” she said.”

So Rosie Aspinall Priest thinks that:

  • objecting to an intoxicated autistic teenage girl being manhandled and arrested by several police officers does not align with the Scottish theatre sector’s values;
  • objecting to a woman being punched twice by a man at a women’s rights event does not align with the Scottish theatre sector’s values.

Or is it criticism of the police which she thinks does not align with the Scottish theatre sector’s values?

TBH I think it's more a case of hunting for things to use to inflate your own power.

I'd never heard of him, but since when are people not allowed to like tweets?
I'd love to hear the explanation of how those tweets are "transphobic".

Struggle session indeed. Soon everyone in the theatre will only discuss food because anything else is too risky. Apparently that's the origin of discussing meals in China as general small talk in the way we comment on the weather.

Goodviibrations · 18/08/2023 12:28

Rosie taking the name Priest a bit literally. Nominative determinism in action?

MyEyesMyThighs · 18/08/2023 12:52

I have a teen involved in the Lyceum youth group - it's pronouns all the way, to the extent that parts of their last show was gobbledegook, with a lady MacBeth using they and lots of teens taking parts based on their sex but insisting on using whatever pronouns they use. No explanation that these girls, playing female roles use he/him.

I took my parents as well and they couldn't make head not tail of some of it.

With the arts in crisis, the sense of priorities is insane.

Fenlandia · 18/08/2023 13:00

This quote from the Lyceum, quoted in the Times:

“At the Lyceum, we value and support our LGBTQIA+ colleagues, friends, and partners. The Lyceum is open and welcome to all and our organisational make-up is reflective of that. We will continue to reflect on how we grow as a progressive and open-minded arts organisation.”

'Open-minded' 😆pull the other one!

I used to feel really bad when I decided never to spend my time and money in museums, galleries, theatres, cinemas etc.

Now I think, my money would be going to these jokers, and my time would be wasted by them.

We've already passed on a whole number of Tate London and Cartoon Museum events.

From now on, we'll stick to small events and exhibitions up here in Norfolk/Cambs/Suffolk where we live, and I'll apply my Woke Antennae to what I read in advance of visiting a show or film.

As far as I can see it, the major cities and metropolitan areas are lost to this madness.
After rueing my early decision to not take part, I now see it as money saved and time not wasted.

Not really.

The crisis in funding means arts organisations are increasingly dependent on government funding.

Have you seen the Scottish government lately?

And artists, writers, and musicians will suffer further as people see the industry full of waffly, nonsensical shite with third rate quality and garbled, contradictory bullshit 'ethics' and back away from it.

The arts is full of privileged people who aren't affected by real life issues and enjoy the chance to virtue signal with rainbows and glitter, wee nyaffs who need to feed their egos by attacking other people for wrongthink, and people who are too afraid to speak up for fear of losing work. (Most are in the latter group.)

This pish comes from those in the establishment making the rules, and dishing out funds, grants and opportunities, not so much from those in the arts actually making work.

If this is true @MissAnneLister then why has the Priest person shut her Twitter account and run away?

After all she appears to be winning this fight. The evil ' racist ' playwright has been forced to make a humiliating apology and go for re-education or whatever. Why not stand her ground. And savour her moment of triumph? It is all very strange is it not.

ArabeIIaKarenScott · 18/08/2023 15:40

Well, without evidence, these are just unsubstantiated accusations.

I don't disagree that class and privilege are huge issues in the arts - I'm not quite so convinced by the assertion that women, gay men, or lesbians are unrepresented, tbh.

By 'establishment' I was talking about politicians, not people working in the arts, all of whom are beholden to the government for funding opportunities.

OP posts:
WaterThyme · 18/08/2023 16:13

I know David Greig. I don’t believe for a moment that he has been “tweeting lots of racist and transphobic tweets”.

If, as Miss Anne Lister claims, he had been doing so, where’s the evidence? Somebody must have archived or screenshot it. Otherwise this is just smears.
