A doctor who prescribed puberty blockers to children as young as 12 has been nominated for an ITV-backed award as a positive role model for LGBT individuals.
Dr Helen Webberley, who was allowed to practise medicine again in March this year after the High Court quashed a misconduct ruling against her, has been selected by the National Diversity Awards for her work.
Welcoming her nomination for the award, Dr Webberley, who worked as a GP in south Wales before setting up her online business, referred to her recent legal battles with the medical regulator.
She said: “I have faced far too many courts and tribunals and each time I have simply told the truth.
“Since 2015, I have faced enormous uphill battles that tried to prevent me from creating services that allow trans people to access healthcare that suits them.”
She added: “I have cried, laughed, screamed and shouted, but every day I have worked towards this one single mission - allow transgender people to live their best lives. End of story!”

Inside the world of private trans healthcare
But the almost impossible question of how to care for young people with gender dysphoria shouldn’t be left to those willing to offer medication on demand. Webberley describes herself as a “doctor peddling in business”. Patients deserve better.
