IUD Fitting "Current Gender Identity"

I phoned up a clinic that offers family planning, contraception, sterilisation, terminations, counselling, all the services are sexual health related. Both NHS and private.
I want a copper coil fitted I was asked a few questions including:

"What is your current gender identity?"

Seriously WTF? How is that relevant? I wasn't asked my sex, just about my gender feelings.

I'm now imagining them trying to insert a coil into a transwoman.

I'd be so tempted to say transwoman and see what they say next

Magenta82 · 15/08/2023 17:17

That would have been good @MrsJamin
Unfortunately I only ever think of good come backs after it's too late.
I was just pleased that I managed to say "I don't have one, my sex is female", instead of what I really wanted to say. It's hard enough to get a coil without pissing off the major local clinic.

I can't get too upset about this, depending on the reason for the question. If it's for their statistical data and they are collecting it instead of data on sex then they are ridiculous. If they just want to know if you are a trans man so they call you Mr Magenta and don't upset you on meeting then that would be ok surely?

Magenta82 · 15/08/2023 17:41

They had already asked my full name and title, so they knew I go by Ms. They didn't need my gender identity, they did need my sex.

I can. The more this nonsense is built into the fabric of daily life, the harder it is to unpick.

They might as well ask your star sign or favourite place to go on holiday for all the relevance this has to gynaecological procedures.

What was your answer to the ridiculous question, @Magenta82?

Magenta82 · 15/08/2023 19:02

I said "I don't have one, my sex is female".

It's bad enough when they use gender as a stand in for sex, but something about the phrase "current gender identity" is so much worse.

It is the equivalent of asking "what denomination of Christian are you?", rather than asking if you have a religion.

Good answer Magenta82 - you are to be commended for your quick thinking! I would be tempted to ask them (after your coil is fitted!) Why they were gathering this info and what the intended use was. Consider tipping off your local paper - my local rag loves trumpeting about barmy council and N.H.S. wasting resources on pointless politically correct garbage such as asking a woman her gender identity for a female only treatment. They might just run with it if it's a slow week!

I might identify as a currant, just to sow confusion.

'Current gender identity?', 'Yes'.
