It was when one husband said "he's not coming back" as if the original person was somebody else. And the discussion of Jungian shadows.
I don't want to intrude on the widows.
Decades ago there was the phenomenon of multiple personalities, usually, but not always, of the same gender as the patient, and usually attributed to childhood trauma creating a safe place to protect the real person. Could this be occurring with transwomen? And thus it being a MH issue?
It has been around much earlier than that, too, if "possession" is also the same phenomenon. Not that I'm suggesting exorcism as a solution. But it might make people wonder about the harmful effects on those around the victims, instead of expecting the wives to celebrate the toxic effects on them.

Yes, in Jungian terminology it would be possession by shadow psychic contents - in a man's case, by the anima. But because the contents have been living in the shadows they are unrefined, raw, primitive and so often overwhelm the conscious persona.

And in a context when these contents have been given permission to express more freely ( TRA ideology); unconstrained by normal social limits and boundaries - many, it is clear, are taking it full time.

....and yes, it must be disturbing for those who live with, or are in the life of the person. It's a form of narcissism/ narcissisitic personality disorder, and the gas lighting is off the scale.

"Complexes are psychic fragments which have split off owing to traumatic influences or certain incompatible tendencies. As the association experiments prove, complexes interfere with the intentions of the will and disturb the conscious performance; they produce disturbances of memory and blockages in the flow of associations; they appear and disappear according to their own laws; they can temporarily obsess consciousness, or influence speech and action in an unconscious way. In a word, complexes behave like independent beings, a fact especially evident in abnormal states of mind. In the voices heard by the insane they even take on a personal ego-character like that of the spirits who manifest themselves through automatic writing and similar techniques." (The Structure and Dynamics of the Psyche, Collected Writings, Volume 8, p. 121)
