Crafting like a TERF

Inspired by the recent thread on clothing/jewellery/personal items you have that are suffragette inspired or that display your terfy tendancies, here is a quick crochet poncho I whipped up last week on holiday. Not sure I'll ever wear it but thought it might come in handy if there are any demos at the Scottish Parliament that I can be brave enough to attend.
Anyone else make terfy crafts?

I made this one a couple of years ago. I wore it several times and had only positive comments. I also made some rosettes from the same yarn.

Love the poncho!

How long did the poncho take to "whip up"? It's so fab!

QueenHippolyta · 14/08/2023 15:30

I love the poncho and adore your hat and scarf! I'm a giant scarf wearer so I'd wear that in a heartbeat!

ArabeIIaScott · 14/08/2023 15:32

Gorgeous poncho! And hat!

Yirk · 14/08/2023 15:34

Love the hat 👍

Two days (maybe 5 or 6 hours of crochet?) It's from a Youtube tutorial by Stephanie Zed, I just changed the colours to suit my project.
Super easy.

What a lovely thread. I've only made terfy banners.

PonyPatter44 · 14/08/2023 19:27

That poncho is amazing- you are very talented. I LOVE the hat though!

I never could learn how to knit or crochet or bloody sew! It's like my brain is wired wrong and I just get really confused.

So I'm in awe of the skills upthread but will admit to seathing inwardly that I've got no chance of ever replicating them.

😍

Suffrageknitter · 14/08/2023 20:38

It’s going to take me a long time to knit over 2000m of 4 ply so I’m still looking for the right pattern.

I've just realised I do have an item that shows my TERFY tendencies. Not knitted, or crocheted or sewn, but crafted non the less.

It's definitely full on TERFY, and involved many tears in its creation.

Plus it's actually a collective creation by 25 different usernames on this board.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C129WKDD

And (does happy dance) here it is on the duvet of Elaine Miller the merkin lady of Scottish Parliament GRR Bill infamy herself. (She has a whole chapter about her in the book)

I've just started today putting together volume 2. (I am determined it will be ready in time to make a fantastic Christmas present for your TERF loved ones!) If anyone fancies donating a poem there's still time!

Plus all profits from both volumes go to For Women Scotland!

What's not to love!

Right that's my buy this book written by mumsnetters you know and love on the FWR board spiel over!

Also, Terf adjacent, well mumsnet adjacent anyway I did spend the other day making very bad Tunnocks Christmas decorations prototypes

I'm in awe at the craftiness. I have zero talent in these areas but so wish I did.

nettie434 · 14/08/2023 21:27

Fantastic examples of craftivism! 👏👏👏 I can't believe that the poncho was completed so quickly.

I only started crocheting during lockdown.
I had tried many many times before that, but this time I was determined and just watched the same Youtube tutorial over and over again, pausing it between the stitches, until I finally produced a wonky granny square.
Since then I have made many things for many people, I love crochet! Seriously, you can do it. It was ages before I realised why I was making the stitches I was making, I just copied what the tutorial said to do, but one day it just clicked and I understood it.
I'm by no means a seasoned crocheter, but I do enjoy it and always have a project on the go.
Here's a really easy bag using granny squares, also in my fav terfy combo of colours.

@HootyMcBooby76 I like that bag!

Honestly, grandad tried to teach me, grannies and aunties and my mother all tried very patiently many times, even my sister's bravely attempted to help. My brain just goes la is la is la when it comes to wool and material. Visiting the haberdashery department was my version of what hell would be!

Now give me some wood and I'll give you a staircase or some windows!

Boiledbeetle · 14/08/2023 21:36

That should have been la la la la la la don't know where the is's came from!

BlueMoe · 14/08/2023 22:11

On a Serious note, the Leeds Spinners “Right side of history, My Arse” banner should be in a museum, as a cultural artifact it is (IMHO) very important.

Kevinscousin · 14/08/2023 22:15

Can I join too? I'm pretty shite and been a beginner for ages(started again after thirty yearslol) I might make a terf jumper or scarf! You are all so good at it!

Kevinscousin · 14/08/2023 22:18

@BlueMoe agree that banner is amazing.Needs to be treasured until the right women who can be trusted with it (not sadly the Glasgow Women's Library or other such places I've heard)and who will ensure it is kept for future generations.

(Deep sigh of longing. ) Oh, that is just delicious. Although I can't be doing with nylon mixes so I am reasonably sure I'm not going to attempt to purchase some in the next half hour. I might have a tiny Google though... just a small one.

It comes in a variety of yarn types.

Suffrageknitter · 14/08/2023 23:29

Yarn bases, I meant.

Suffrageknitter · 14/08/2023 23:33

The mini skein fade would make a lovely scarf. It comes in DK merino.

PickAChew · 14/08/2023 23:42

There's some jammies I made.

Never got the hang of crochet. Hurts my hands too much.

Crafting like a TERF
Legoroses · 14/08/2023 23:45

Argh! I have seen all the bases.

I really really v much need to not buy any more yarn.

I did buy suffragette stacking rings from Dinny Hall as v subtle way of flashing the ole Terfdom but I can't actually find any of them - been taking them off to wash my hands.
