If you read nothing else today etc...

This is a brilliant article by a clinical psychologist about the reality of childhood social transition. It really clarifies exactly why it's not necessarily beneficial to the child.

It's seriously worth a read:

Childhood social transition is seen as 'kind.' A clinical psychologist explains what we set a child up for when we socially transition them.

No offence but it could be a Counselling Psychologist, not a clinical one. Not all Psychologists are clinical!

Counselling, health, forensic and occupational psychs are rarely credited. Its an important piece though xx

This is what made me think it might have been a clinical psychologist:

Childhood social transition is portrayed as ‘kind’ and ‘affirming.’ But what are we setting a child up for when puberty hits, if we pretend they are the opposite sex for the best part of their childhood? A clinical psychologist, with over 15 years of experience of working with adults, children and families, explains the inevitable consequences.

Great article. It’s made me quite emotional. We’re doing the alternative universe with my youngest dd. It’s what my parents did with me.

She’s having her hair cut tonight. She wants to go back to really short, rather than the slightly more ‘feminine’ style that she wanted to try out this last year. I’m really reluctant because the world is no longer set up where it’s OK to be a tomboy.

But heaven forfend anyone that tells her there’s something wrong with her body because she likes her hair short.

oops! my bad! Good to mention Counselling Psychologists anyway.

A letter was written to the British Psychological Soc. by a group of all types of Psychologist about gender if you're interested. Asking for balance care and nuance. The BPS haven't been great. It's fair to say.

I don't think that any of the professions involved with vulnerable children have covered themselves with glory. In a few years, they're going to have to ask a lot of questions about the weakness of their governance and the manner in which they've colluded in sceptical colleagues being steamrollered and silenced.

This experienced clinical psychologist also wrote a piece for the wonderful TT about the devastating psychological impact on teenagers of going along with the belief that they're the opposite sex. It's equally as powerful:

When a teenager says they're transgender - Transgender Trend

What's the best approach when a teenager says they're transgender? Are there risks in the affirmation and social transition approach?

Amazing how powerful simple truth can be.

Feel tearful after reading those pieces.

Absolutely. It's been shocking. There just hasn't been any governance at all. I can't think of any other aspect of health care where there has been less.
