I haven’t lived in Sussex for 15 years but still get info in my news feed. Imagine my surprise when I saw this! Can hardly believe that this has been allowed to go to print. The Brighton and Hove Evening Argus is the only daily paper in the whole of Sussex (I think). Good on them for allowing free speech.

All may not be well in ‘Queer City’.

I’m not sure if you will be able to see this, I needed a long ladder to see over the crowds.

OPINION: 'It's time for an end to Pride, which has become toxic'

Last Saturday, notwithstanding the rain and wind, tens of thousands of people turned out for the annual Brighton Pride. I have been on Pride marches…

lols middle aged white guy opines on the LGBT+ youth of today being different to his era.

Yes, that is what happens, and the journalist is out of touch.

The Argus are well known over the years for their anti LGBT approach. This surprises few, as noted in the comments on the article.

A big yawn.

RebelliousCow · 10/08/2023 09:18

Pride comes before a fall. Hubris will inevitably bring you down.

When something goes beyond its natural boundaries there will inevitably be a corresponding corrrectional force.T he whole TQ+ is intent on forever pushing at boundaries, trying to 'queer' everything. Nothing is ever enough. Nothing really ever delivers the healing of wholeness that is being sought. Trans euphoria doesn't last for long before the limitations and boundaries reveal themselves once more.

Bring on Eddie Izzard.......

Still wearing the blinkers?

People have been tiring of Pride for years now. People have had enough of it.
where I live people were commenting on what an unpleasant atmosphere there was at this years event. I always used to attend because I love taking photographs - but now steer clear of it. It is no longer about unity and celebration - but about division and oppression.

RebelliousCow · 10/08/2023 09:23

..and about parading fetish and kink! Oh And I'm sick to death of drag queens.

'middle aged white guy' - none of these attributes have any relevance at all to the subject.

The writer is a gay man. Pride purports to represent gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, that's the reason it was founded.

RoseslnTheHospital · 10/08/2023 09:31

I didn't realise that people must be aged out of being part of the LGB community, Mishy, Once you're middle aged (the horror!) then you're no longer allowed an opinion on your own community. Ok.

longwayoff · 10/08/2023 09:40

I've just read Mr Wallis's wiki entry, not heard of him before. This dross is what we're welcoming into parliament? Frankly, Eddie/Susie looks like a definite improvement.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 10/08/2023 09:40

lol at the idea the Argus is anti LGBTQ Mishy. A cursory Google will show you they’ve printed loads of positive and supportive articles over many years. But that doesn’t fit with your “they’ve always been big meanies” narrative does it

..and certainly. a better opportunity to parade the full spectacle for public view.

One of the comments...

Perhaps if Eddy/Suzy Izzard is selected for and wins Brighton Pavilion from the Greens at the next General Election then Brighton, a progressive City, will give Transpeople a voice in Parliament.

Erm... What about the current Transmember of parliament or does he not count?

Who is the current trans member of parliament? I didn’t know there was one, so would be interested to know

Chersfrozenface · 10/08/2023 09:48

ArabeIIaScott · 10/08/2023 08:49

Mystery to me why there hasnt been much more celebration of Jamie Wallis as the first transwoman MP.

Could it be because he would be a major embarrassment to his own side?

This one is living up to your usual, Mishy.

”‘middle aged white guy’ opines on LGBT+”

Do you ever stop and think about what you write in your supposed support of LGBT people, Mishy? I do notice you got it right not to put ‘straight’ in the description.

So, tell us Mishy, what made you think it was not offensive and not ageist to say this? In Brighton? Was it just because you didn’t say the man was gay? You think that saved your post?

In Brighton? Where the huge majority of the population are ‘white’, why should a ‘white man’s’ opinion be vilified in the way you have done and not be considered respresentative of some groups of the community?

Where a man who has fought for same sex rights for decades, why should a ‘middle aged man’s’ opinion be vilified as you have done? Why should a younger person’s be decreed as most appropriate?

Of course, anyone reading this board can assume the intention of your posts. This one is just as offensive as others in the past which you have been deleted for.

If an experienced campaigner, who is same sex attracted, who campaigns on the rights for people with same sex orientation is to be breezily dismissed as not representative because they are ‘white’ in a huge majority white area, and middle aged, while continuing to campaign for same sex attracted people…. Gosh… who is left to speak?

The ‘youth’? Those who have been now shown to be not only the least tolerant group of people in the UK? And now the group who don’t even understand the terminology of the sub group they have positioned themselves as campaigners for, or even belong to?

Really Mishy? You are really now very much out of date. But you also really seem to be more and more phobic.

CeciNestPasUnPipi · 10/08/2023 10:32

Mishy DJ's prejudice is striking.

Jamie Wallis, out and proud. Sits on the Women's and Equalities Commission.

nauticant · 10/08/2023 11:39

Just so it's clear, Jamie Wallis falls into the category of "not really trans"? Like Ilsa Bryson?

princessleah1 · 10/08/2023 11:47

I live in Brighton. Pride is a mess, parts of the park have to fenced off because people use the space to take drugs and have sex (get a room!). When I worked for the council they would send out an email to children social care staff asking for volunteers to work a stall caring for children/young people who'd got themselves in a mess from taking too many substances. The road by the park is always litteres with broken glass and I get a bike puncture! Every year! There's vomit and shit. My 20 year didn't go this year as she said the only people she knows are homophobic boys who go to get shitfaced.
I think generally people in Brighton are pissed off with our public spaces being fenced off for entire weekends so people can come into town and behave in ways they never would in their own town.

Florissante · 10/08/2023 11:54

You can add racist to Mishy's sexist post. I mean, how dare a white person have an opinion?

BernardSure · 10/08/2023 12:09

Was tempted to report Mishy'd post for racism and gerontophobia - however I think it should stand as it's very illuminating. 'By their fruits shall you know them'.

Gnomegarden32 · 10/08/2023 12:28

I've emailed the editor to thank him for publishing the article but it said he was out of office - perhaps that's how the article got published?! Anyway I've sent my support to the other email addresses given.

lifeturnsonadime · 10/08/2023 12:50

That is a brave editorial. It doesn't hold back and simply says what many many people think.

Coming from Brighton perhaps there is hope that that tide is turning.

When someone tells you who they are, believe them - as Mishy's posts amply demonstrate.

crikey

Let’s not pretend that Pride remains one big happy family.

Whattheactualwhatnow · 10/08/2023 12:59

What a brilliant article!!!

AtrociousCircumstance · 10/08/2023 13:07

It’s so heartening that this has been published. Amazing truth telling article.
