I thinks a lot of people are confused by the language. Particularly people who don’t use social media, as most news outlets like the BBC aren’t reporting on this stuff.

I’ve had several conversations recently where the person believed transwomen to mean a woman who thinks she is trans.
A female colleague told me she was fine with transwomen using the female toilets at work. When I explained to her that transwomen are actually men she was horrified.

This is not surprising. I had to get my head around the 'terminology' and was called a TERF before I knew what it stood for, ditto cis.
Having accepted that a 'transwoman' in the 'gender identity ideology terminology' refers to someone born a man and that a 'transman' is someone born a woman, I know find myself hesitating over the real meaning of 'transgender man/woman'.

It seems people are now using transgender man/woman a lot now and it is totally unclear to me which biology it refers to.
No wonder most people are confused especially when coupled with preferred pronouns.

Definitely. The language is deliberately confusing anyway but if you are not engaged in the debate I suspect (as Tweeps already pointed out) that most people would naturally think that a trans woman is a natal female who is aiming to present themselves as a man. That's what I thought when I first started paying proper attention to the debate anyway.

Quite often there are attempts to obscure the truth by the trans ideology movement and trying to conflate Differences in sex development with being intersex or that sex isn't binary when it most definitely is. Language is used to do this too so that for many people if they haven't looked into it have very little idea of what is really going on and what all this is an attempt to legitimise. Those tactics have proven very successful along with the demonisation and labelling of anyone who dares question it a bigot or terf and therefore threatened with social (media) ostracism or worse.

I think it is very telling indeed that a movement would go to such lengths to obscure reality and shut down anyone who questions it.

Just so I get it clear in my head,
Does transgender man = person that thinks he’s a woman?

nosmallfeet · 08/08/2023 14:43

Transgender man would usually mean a woman who imagines she is a man. Some gender critical people say trans identified man meaning a man who imagines he's a woman.

ScribblingPixie · 08/08/2023 14:43

Hardly surprising when people been told that 'trans women are women' and 'trans men are men' for the last x number of years, that some would believe that was actually the case.

Their strategy is working then.

The more that people understand what exactly is going on the quicker this bullshit might go away.

It should mean that (and used to), with transwoman having the same meaning. But the manglers of language have changed all that, the aim being to ensure that it is not possible to identify that the person is male.

Chersfrozenface · 08/08/2023 15:32

"transgender" has, deliberately, been used as an adjective to imply that a "transgender woman" is just another kind of woman, like a blonde woman or a middle-aged woman.

Whereas in fact a transgender woman is in fact a kind of man - one who says he is a woman.

BabyStopCryin · 08/08/2023 15:47

I remember having a discussion with a grown man (life science MA) who believed that humans could be male AND female, or neither, and some could have boobs and testicles. The poor things. He had met some cross dressers in his travels… so that confirms it then.
