Brighton Pride: Trans activists block Labour Party in parade

Trans rights activists blocked Labour activists, councillors and MPs during the Pride parade to protest against the party’s stance on LGBTQ+ rights.

Protesters held a banner that said “Starmer Hates Trans People” in front of a group of party members, including Hove MP Peter Kyle, council leader Bella Sankey and Eddie Izzard, who is hoping to become Brighton Pavilion's MP in the future.

Trans rights campaigners have expressed anger at Labour after party leader Keir Starmer rowed back on plans to introduce a self-identification system to allow transgender people to legally identify as their chosen gender without a medical diagnosis.

.
In the meantime Labour is now trying to "soften" their message about supporting women with this statement:

Anneliese Dodds: Labour wants to tackle ‘indignities’ for trans people and protect women’s spaces

“We are continuously learning about the situation for trans people,” she said, in an interview with i. “We have also seen developments in Scotland where the SNP had a particular approach where the result of that has been conflict, fuelled by the Conservatives in Westminster, and actually trans people are no further on.

“There’s been a tremendous row, there’s taxpayers money being paid on legal challenges but trans people are no further forward and I don’t want to see that situation.

“I want us to be able to reform, to remove those indignities and at the same time to have a system that is robust that commands public confidence.”

Elections are determined by a few swing constituencies. Maybe many of those aren't in Momentum strongholds (seats Labour will hold anyway?).

I don't think TRA groups protesting against Keir Starmer is bad for him. He's moved his position so they are now angry at him.

Labour strategists will be pleased, I would think.

Agree with that. Not that Labour deserve it.

SunnyEgg · 07/08/2023 21:55

I’m not sure Labour can claim we care they don’t when they have Starmer hates signs up

Anyway they can lob it out with each other, they both sound ridiculous

lanadelgrey · 07/08/2023 22:21

For the coming election, Labour are unlikely to lose either side of Brighton Pavillion - Lloyd Russell Moyle to the east and Peter Kyle to the west but they want to win against the Greens in Caroline Lucas’s seat - the Eddie Izzard target, and could probably get the next two west from Hove towards Worthing. So they will be busy trying to work out if Izzard is a liability or a vote winner. Kyle and LRM are never seen in the same space together, one the rabble rouser, the other is remarkably quiet on this issue but is utterly tied to Starmer and v quietly ambitious

Our friend Lloyd R-M is keeping his head down isn't he?

Yes, let's pray that the toilet seat doesn't fall and break his neck, as he drinks.

The comments (presumably mostly from Brighton people) on the Argus article linked to in the OP are quite heartening

The ones calling Izzard a working class hero?

And what indignities is Anodyne Dodds referring to? The indignity of no longer being allowed to go into the changing rooms in Sparks and wank on the lingerie? The indignity of the current difficulty in going into the swimming pool changing rooms and waving their willies in front of little girls?

Someone needs to have her clarify in Parliament.

On another thread we were talking about how language evolves. Does 'hate' now mean 'disagrees with'?

What a missed opportunity for a Kakaya Consyerva drone strike.

( Kakaya Consyerva my wife confirms that my daughter has translated Poo Tin correctly).

Slothtoes · 07/08/2023 23:26

What is it with TRAs and covering up their faces? Why? They look absolutely barking in that picture- are they really wearing square flaps of flesh coloured cloth over their faces? Can they see anything through it?

Anyway, whatever- these lonely and very strange-looking protestors couldn’t be more useful to publicly peak Starmer and the Labour Party upper echelons at this point. Bring it on.

Starmer should be seeing clearly by now that no thanks will ever come to him from TRAs (whatever he does it will never be enough) and that popular votes will evaporate if he tries to meet TRA demands, so surely he would never let Labour have self ID as policy ever again. He just needs to keep going…

I think he’ll be happy to see such a tiny, strange protest against his stance on self ID, it puts loveyclear blue water politically between the TRA and himself, in one handy photo.

Slothtoes · 07/08/2023 23:27

‘Lovely clear blue water’ that should have said.

AutumnCrow · 08/08/2023 00:17

Btw, Izzard's twitter feed Aug 5 - still other photos of him with Kyle and LRM. Can't be arsed posting them all tonight.

😂

Operation Let the Trans Activists Speak is going marvellously for the Tervish.

Wonder when the other side will realise they are repeatedly scoring in their own goal?

No one has mentioned here that I can see that the Brighton Council was taken by Labour from the Greens in May after 20 years. It is the flagship council for the Greens nationwide so it was a massive blow. It is why Labour think they can take Brighton Pavilion and possibly why Caroline Lucas stood down as she may not wanted to face defeat. A lot of local issues lay in the flip, the Greens had made many mistakes, but women's issues were a big factor. Women were organising in the run up to the vote
www.brightonandhovenews.org/2023/01/30/does-brighton-have-a-woman-problem/

RISE scandal - The council stopped funding an excellent well established local refuge run by women, but catering to all, in favour of a more corporate chain more focused on men and using buzz words.
https://www.brightonandhovenews.org/2023/03/08/160942/

Brighton Women’s Liberation Collective organises Sisters Salon, the local women's meeting, organised a mass leaflet drop in Brighton focusing on women's issues prior to the election - an election where the Greens were defeated. Brilliant example of local activism and which had an obvious impact.

Whichever party runs Brighton in future it will be the one that doesn't pretend 50% of humanity doesn't exist.

How is RISE doing? Like our women, we’re survivors

Now life has moved back to a semblance of normality, when meeting people in real life I often get asked,

The thread title made me think of the past, when lesbians who objected to men calling themselves lesbians were the first group to be treated this way. I had a real “first they came for the lesbians” moment.

Looks like the Labour Party might finally begin to see what women have been fighting against. Not going to hold my breath, but never disturb your enemy when he’s making a mistake….

margaretatwoodslefteyebrow · 08/08/2023 09:57

At Leeds pride on Sunday the (small group of) Labour marchers had trans rights banners etc in totality with no reference at all to the wider LGB community.

It's at least an improvement on the scrappy bits of cardboard written with felt tip pen that so many of them have.

I remember reading about this. Amnesty International will have lost supporters by being seen to condone the nasty language used in those banners - which is really unfortunate for the people who AI was set up to help.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/08/2023 10:54

I was at FiLiA 2021. Oddly enough the TRAs claimed to know nothing about the obscene placards & drawings in the middle of their protest. Yeah, right.

They also had Amnesty-branded ‘I am who I say I am’ placards. Talk about a safeguarding nightmare.
