People flocking for gender surgery in NZ.....

Article on Stuff states that "the number of patients referred to the (health) service increased by 160% between October 2018 and September 30th, 2020", with accompanying graph detailing actual numbers supplied by Te Whatu Ora (the health service). Absolutely astonishingly (or not 🙄) it makes no mention of the even more extraordinary leap in numbers between quarters 3&4 of 2018.

What happened at the end of 2018? The rise of Tiktok?

The arrival of a surgeon?

Igmum · 05/08/2023 10:01

And the massive growth in trans males. Thanks OP. I would be interested to see this broken down by age. Suspect that many (most) of the TM are children

GourmetLettuceMix · 05/08/2023 10:04

That would make sense - did I miss reference to this in the article? I thought it was odd not to mention the great leap, but maybe it does infer a reason. All the other ads and links are distracting me from the bones of the article 🙈

This is referrals for assessment for surgery though, not actual surgeries. I'm not sure what the process was in NZ before this dedicated GRS surgeon provided her services. I wonder if surgeries were carried out in the private system or people went abroad.

NZ media is not allowing any critical voices at all. I’m really scared for the future of women here, it’s like watching how things started in the UK and none of the warnings have been heeded.

Teachers have been primed to accept gender changes and are under the obligation to keep information from parents/ carers/ whanau. Schools in some areas are facilitating pre surgery drugs/ ideology and appointments under the guise of supporting mental health.

The media explicitly linked Kellie J Keen to fascism and her assault was seen as somehow ‘deserved’. There are a few organisations taking a stand but not many and their voices are drowned out, even cultural groups who fear for the protection of Māori culture are being studiously ignored.

There will be many transitioned and I wonder how ‘brave and wonderful’ those people who facilitate the mutilation of youngsters will be when the kids are de transitioning their scarred bodies.

This is so concerning and heartfelt. I can see it happening here and it worries me

Although maybe the media will be out one difference

Our..

stealtheatingtunnocks · 05/08/2023 10:31

I don’t know when the surgeon started but I do know people had to travel to Oz or further afield before a female surgeon arrived at, I think, middlemore. There were issues with anaesthetic staff refusing to do the work for her list so she moved to, I think, Wellington. I have ex colleagues who now work in health in NZ, they are GC and worried about this

Medical scandal flourishes unopposed.
The fallout.
The public enquiry.
"Never again".

Medical scandal flou...um, you get my drift.

@MsRead I was horrified, and actually quite afraid of the media for the first time in my life, when things blew up with KJK. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing and seeing - the wilful disregard of the truth. Even my husband was shocked. I do worry for girls and women in this country.

It's horrible in NZ.

We were across in February and strongly considered moving there (home for me) because of how wonderful it felt for our children to be with their cousins, but this was one of the factors that helped us decide not to.

The increasingly authoritarian bent of the government, the media's complicity in this, and people being unwilling to step outside the mainstream bubble are all contributing factors.

It's going to take something awful to turn it around, if it ever will.

It will happen, there's no alternative. If it doesn't, that will be proof the Western Enlightenment model has run its course, and I don't think that's true.

What will be the case is that many countries will shell out so drastically, that the repercussions will be more dramatic, and the recriminations way more ugly.

NZ and Canada at the forefront, US just behind.

The big pharmaceutical companies and their shareholders need to be held to account for what has happened their profit margins have eroded safety and protection for women. 13 years ago I worked somewhere with a trans woman and naively supported the idea/ felt how liberating it all was. I was so wrong.

Despite our reputation overseas, NZ is now frequently giving home detention/ letting off crimes/ sexual assaults against women, our media spend more time analysing rugby than what is happening to half the population. Our health system has removed the word ‘woman ‘ from a lot of medical descriptions and refuses to discuss the removal. We also have despicable rates of child abuse/ poor safeguarding ( worse than the UK) and anyone who raises a voice against the concept of self ID is screamed at as a fascist.

As a traditional Labour voter, I cannot vote Labour or Green at the next election in October because they don’t know what a woman is. I would rather eat slugs than vote National/ Nz First/ Act, although the right wing parties have not clarified their stance despite having been asked by me via email. I wonder what will happen after the election. As a GC
leftie I feel Jacinda Ardern did so much damage to this country. It’s also ironic that she and other self ID advocates don’t equate the horrendous misogynistic abuse they face online with ingrained societal attitudes. We still have men protesting outside hospitals on the days when the abortion clinic is in session at the local hospital.

Gender reassignment is very much here, isn’t discussed apart from in terms of being ‘ wonderful and brave’. As in the UK, middle class left leaning people take self ID and surgery as being ‘kind’ without, imo, having considered what this whole issue actually means. I don’t think we are now too many years behind the UK and it is terrifying, particularly because beneath the surface I believe women and more importantly children are not safe.

Jake the Muss never went away. He just dyed his hair blue.

Totally sums it up, will be using this!

It’s also very frustrating seeing friends completely taken in by the ideology, people who I used to respect but no longer feel I can.

GourmetLettuceMix · 05/08/2023 22:59

@SpanielsMatter I was pleased to read this article this week about safe zones around abortion clinics, which will come into force at the end of this month. Only 6 clinics though, not sure how many more there are.

Big win for Dunedin's 'dicks guy'

Sam Sharpe has led a counter-protest against abortion protesters for more than a decade. He's about to put his infamous sign away.

I used to live in NZ just over a decade ago and none of this genderwoo nonsense was going on at all. How has it happened so fast? I was pleased to see that Sean Plunket allowed KJK to speak. I remember him from when I lived there.

Backstreets · 07/08/2023 06:46

I’d love to see some demographic breakdowns of those figures.

NZ was always going to fall victim to the “more progressive than thou” little rich country curse.
