“Protest” Italy Beauty Pageant

I don’t understand what they’re “protesting”.

Female-only. They’re female. They’re eligible. They can enter and see how well they do. Some have even progressed along the process. Crack on then.

I don’t have a high opinion of beauty pageants, but I think this more highlights the issue that TRAs have no idea what they really want or what people object to.

These females are not protesting to rail against the established idea of beauty - I think it would be great if a gender non-conforming female won such a competition - but instead they’re protesting because they think this will help the poor males get access to something that has been restricted to females. Why do these females feel the need to help these poor excluded males?🤨

So a competition predicated on a set of regressive stereotypes is protested by groups of activists whose identities are predicated on sets of regressive stereotypes?

I think it's a great idea. Why should beauty be reserved for stereotypical looks. I would love to see a transman win and let the world see that female means sex, not hair, makeup and clothes.

It would be a good idea if that’s what they were protesting about. But they’re not. These females are protesting to object to the fact males who subscribe to regressive stereotypes aren’t allowed to participate and are hoping this will make the organisers change their minds on behalf of those males.

They are reinforcing the regressive stereotypes by doing this.

I hope the beauty pageant embraces all the transmen.

Among those applying to participate was Federico Barbarossa, a trans activist from Bari in southern Italy, who applied under his “deadname” of Federica.

I thought using a “deadname” was so distressing that it would be impossible to use it for political purposes.

“The fact that women who have changed gender can’t participate is the umpteenth demonstration of how transphobic Italy is.

And this, of course, is where there is a complete departure from reality. Women who have “changed gender” are transmen. Perhaps Italy really is transphobic and these women who have changed gender will be rejected for “being trans”. If these women who claim they are men are accepted and embraced by the organizers, it will send a clear message that they are not transphobic. Instead they are pro woman.

I saw this on Instagram, I can’t make this make sense.

The transmen who are applying have every right to compete in women only beauty contests. They don’t want to and they don’t want to be called by their original names, be referred to as women or be judged on their appearance as women.

They want to make the point that they - masculine looking women- are eligible for women’s beauty contests but TW- feminine looking men aren’t. Which is so feminist adjacent it’s almost funny.

If transmen are allowed in I can’t see how a contest can be transphobic- it bars men of all presentations and allows women.

I don’t like beauty contests but unless you want a mixed sex competition open to any presentation (or all gender as the kids would say) then transmen in transwomen out seems fair.

When can natal women compete in trans only beauty contests? 🤔

I think this is great too! Whilst attempting to reinforce regressive stereotypes they are highlighting how artificially constructed they are.

It's win win. Either the pageant lets the transmen compete or decides the transwomen can.

Here comes the sun do-do-do-dooooo, here comes the sun and I say, it's alright... <toddles off happily singing>
