University gym "womxn only sessions"

Went into local uni sports centre today. Posters everywhere advertising their special gym sessions only for "womxn and non-binary." Lots of blah about how important it is for "womxn" to feel comfortable using the gym. At the bottom in small print an explanation that "womxn is an inclusive term which includes people previously excluded from white feminist discourse, such as women of colour and trans women." FFS. So it's okay to use the word woman to describe trans women but not to describe actual women. And these special sessions are in fact open to anyone who says they are non-binary or a woman. So not remotely a safe single sex space. I'm so cross. I was there with 15 year old DD who is super woke with lots of trans and non binary friends. I really wanted to talk to her about it but didn't want to spoil a rare activity together by arguing.

The racist suggestion that women of colour are not women is shocking. I would struggle not to write a complaint about the implicit racism of that description.

This! How are they possibly saying that anyone other than a white woman was not defined as female before? Just beyond bonkers.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 01/08/2023 15:32

I thought the word womxm had been dropped. I’m sure I read that it upset TW’s because TW are women and as such shouldn’t be described as anything but women and not some made up word.

You are correct. The Twitch gaming platform used it a while back and rapidly found out that it apparently is a "terf invention"

Womxn is an intersectional term intended to signal the inclusion of those who have traditionally been excluded from white feminist discourse: Black women, women of colour, and trans women.*

The session is for womxn as defined above, are white women allowed ?

TheHappyCarrot · 01/08/2023 15:50

Still not sure what non binary is.

Still not sure what non binary is.

Well there seem to be 2 types of non binary. One involves an.orange tutu and demanding and being given permission to enter womens spaces because using the mens is triggering because" they arent a man but using the womens isn't equally triggering 🤔

And one involves removal of breasts or binders...

I'll leave you to work out what the difference is.

The cynicism and dishonesty of these fuckers knows no limit, does it? With an added side-helping of racism too.

Cismyfatarse · 01/08/2023 17:38

Surely it should be womXYn!

Choice
A. Mixed sessions with men
B. Mixed sessions with men who believe they are women. Men who know they men are excluded.

A. For me anyday. I would feel very uncomfortable with B as the advert is positively promoting and attracting transwomen over women and the black women comment is appalling. I don’t want to be in any group that thought this was good.

At least with Option A the men will mostly be using the men’s changing rooms!

Option B is almost guaranteed to be creepy and uncomfortable. I really wonder how long the initiative will last for - usually when the women stop going, the men do too.

ArcaneWireless · 01/08/2023 17:52

Womxn.

A term used by twxts.

And as for their attempt at keeping women of colour in their womxnly place?

Get tae fuck.

Joey2323 · 01/08/2023 18:02

Comparing black women to transwomen is vile and racist. Of course black women are included in the term woman 🙄🙄

FrancescaContini · 01/08/2023 18:04

Not the point but how do you even pronounce that meaningless word?

Thehonestybox · 01/08/2023 18:15

I thought the main point of women only gym or swim sessions was that muslim women can participate without worrying about covering up?

I'm not sure how hijabi muslim women feel about not covering up around trans women or non-binary? But it seems like the aim of these sessions is just "men are excluded just...because"

Atomsaway · 01/08/2023 18:17

JanesLittleGirl · 31/07/2023 21:47

Every session is a session for mxn.

Exactly this.

FrancescaContini · 01/08/2023 18:18

🤦‍♀️ at “these sessions are for people who don’t feel comfortable exercising with men” - women, then?

This ideology is eating itself up before our very eye.

FrancescaContini · 01/08/2023 18:19

Or eyes, even.

My friend who is an observant Muslim and wears a hijab self-excluded from women-only swimming sessions that were changed to allow 'anyone who identifies as a woman'. That was her main form of exercise.
She was and continues to be furious about it, of course.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 01/08/2023 18:46

What?? So women of colour are not women? How the hell have they got away with that piece of excrement without being prosecuted?
Between that and the Costa thread my blood pressure is suffering today.

forgotmyusername1 · 01/08/2023 19:03

So if a group of blokes turn up at the wrong time they can just go 'damn it's women's hour - just say we are women and we can go it'

Changeforachange · 01/08/2023 19:04

Interesting image they've chosen to advertise their 'womxn' sessions for the excluded minority groups who are their target audience.

What appears to be an attractive young white woman in gender conforming gym gear...

WarriorN · 01/08/2023 20:31

Jesus.
that's a stock photo.

They really could have made a bit of an effort there.

This is such a lame trend. And then there's trans exclusive sessions creeping in.

Women simply don't count.

dimorphism · 01/08/2023 21:25

You know that "the good men stay out so the bad men stand out"? Well when it comes to exercise classes, I'll be looking for ones that are mixed sex because then there will be good men in there to balance the ones who don't give a shit about women.

These 'inclusive' so called women only things are now basically using women as a resource for bad men (the boundary pushers) to use. Give me the decent chaps over that any day.

Thisishard23 · 01/08/2023 22:47

Jesus. Reading that gives me the rage.

Thisishard23 · 01/08/2023 22:49

Is the word woman a swear word FFS?

Well, I wondered too …

What is Non-Binary?
Denoting, Having, or relating to a gender identity that does not conform to traditional binary beliefs about gender. People may still present femme or masculine and still identify as non-binary.

If I am gender critical. and don’t “conform to traditional binary beliefs about gender” (because I believe gender is a social construct and sex is biology), am I therefore non-binary now?

I think you are!

You know I'm fairly sure if your average 20ish non binary person discovered that the majority of their mum's friends are actually also non binary they'd be mortified.
