It's a start. He's also a gay man and many gay men are finally becoming aware of how conversion therapy in real life is working with gay kids being gaslit into believing that transitioning is what they need / want rather than being allowed to grow into gay men and lesbians.

Of course so many of us are hurting in the face of such relentless misogyny and hatred, nurtured by politicians on the left who should know better. I've been waiting for some apologies for Rosie from the Labour party - now Streeting has to persuade others to join in - and to reverse the anti women attitudes and actions they've been indulging in.

endofthelinefinally · 28/07/2023 20:50

Whatever happened to Lily Madigan?

AHugeTinyMistake · 28/07/2023 20:58

I listened to a podcast where Wes Streeting was interviewed about his book - the News Agents on 14th July. Towards the end Lewis asked him a few questions about trans rights/women's rights and he said some things that took me aback a bit, in a good way. Recognising the clash of rights. Couldn't analyse them as I was in the middle of a run but I also got the distinct impression he was trying to tread a fine line.

However, I know he was one of the Labour zealots on this issue so it's definitely positive. I don't actually care if he's saying this for ambitious reasons - he can see how the wind is blowing now and as a member of the shadow cabinet he has influence

DworkinWasRight · 28/07/2023 21:01

I’m sure this will have been discussed with Starmer first - a deliberate strategy on Labour’s part. None of this is accidental. They know they risk losing women’s votes.

ScrollingLeaves · 28/07/2023 21:01

I’m really sorry about the way Rosie’s been treated.”

He may be sorry about the way she has been treated. As a literal statement that does not mean he agrees she has had important points to make about the conflicts with women’s rights. It just means he is sorry people have disagreed in a rude and aggressive manner.

...topic of self-ID had “sometimes created a wedge between friends”….

Means: Rosie and I were great friends, but of course there had to be a wedge between us on this subject because I simply could not let trans people down about this - no matter what my feelings for Rosie. Trans peoples’ right to self-ID had to trump the rest.

There are times when Rosie’s kind of tweeted or liked certain things and I’ve been really upset……..

means of course I was upset because I have strong feelings of right and wrong and it was so wrong of her ……..

and there were times where, you know, I’ve taken a much more defensive position around trans equality……….

means, because I know how trans people are the most marginalised in our society so of course I had to defend them ……

and Rosie’s felt that [I] personally, and others, haven’t listened…….

means these were Rosie’s feelings but that does not mean to say she was right.

That’s why I think we’ve got to try and find a better way through this ….. means not that woman have anything I recognise as needing protecting but maybe there can be some compromise with them but I am not saying what that “better way through” would be and I am certainly not meaning clarifying the EA

to create a culture in which friendships aren’t divided, families aren’t divided, and countries aren’t divided.”………….

means just be unified in voting for labour
and woman, surely you don’t want a ruined, divided family or country over this……

what did you say? Did you say your family is already broken by your autistic teen deciding to take cross sex hormones and opt for surgery ? Or did you say it was already broken by your husband stealing your underwear and saying he is transgender? Maybe you need a better family culture, be more open minded.

Did you say you were worried about women’s sports? Or did I mishear you ? was that about male crimes being reported as women’s? Schools? No nothing is wrong there.

bellinisurge · 28/07/2023 21:01

Better than nothing. Not enough yet.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:03

@AutumnCrow tory policy disaster you mean. All this shit has happened under the tories. Just because Sunak has made a couple of comments about women not having penises just means they’ve seen a way of squeezing a few votes from gender critical feminists. You could say that allowing transwomen in prisons and throwing a few measly scraps of meat to GC women is the height of cynicism and hypocrisy.

SunnyEgg · 28/07/2023 21:04

Streeting and the rest sound a bit unstuck by the ULEZ result

A minute ago it was all we can’t hear you, just those with a penis lot

TheirEminence · 28/07/2023 21:04

Divided friendships, families, countries. Oh, how sad and tragic. I’ve already lost the friendships I was ever going to lose over this, and I don’t think they can be fixed. It’s too late now.

dcbc1234 · 28/07/2023 21:09

Too little. Too late and why isn't Starmer apologising to all women in the UK for pretending their sex based rights did not exist in UK law, when they clearly did bit we're wilfully misinterpreted. Not very honourable for a lawyer.

AutumnCrow · 28/07/2023 21:13

Search my username, if you wish, against Penny Mordaunt, Caroline Nokes, Maria Miller, Theresa May, Crispin Blunt, Amber Rudd, Nicky Morgan and the rest. I have on record only criticism after criticism of the scandal they have unleashed on this nation, a form of social engineering penetrating our public and key private(ised) services the like of which we have never before seen.

And that is why my disappointment, as a left-of-centre politically active woman, with the Labour Party (and the Lib Dems) as an Opposition could not be any greater.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:14

Sounds like whatever they do nothing will make amends.
@SunnyEgg which ULEZ result. The one today or Uxbridge ?

HPFA · 28/07/2023 21:17

Tanith · 28/07/2023 20:18

Rosie Duffield appears happy with it and she's the one who matters, surely.

All you're doing is demonstrating that, in actual fact, you don't want to see an apology from Keir Starmer or anyone else in the Labour Party. They can apologise all they like; you'll refuse to see it as anything other than a cynical ploy.

Wes Streeting is one of the very few politicians so far to offer anything like an apology. I'm sure there must be others but, at the moment, I can't think of a single one of them. Good job they never wasted their breath, isn't it?

The goalposts seem to shift every time a Labour politician actually does the thing demanded of them.

And weirdly the party who actually presided over the Tavistock disaster and wanted to introduce self ID until the public reaction stopped them get a free pass

It's all so transparent.

SunnyEgg · 28/07/2023 21:17

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:14

@SunnyEgg which ULEZ result. The one today or Uxbridge ?

Both. The vote which they didn’t expect but also the win today which means Streeting has said more on it against Khan

As for amends it Rosie Duffield took over I wouldn’t mind. She is genuine, going by standing up for women when all the men around her completely dismissed the issue.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:19

@AutumnCrow agreed that they’ve belated changed their tune but their stance towards trans people wasn’t historically that out of character considering their background if you think about it.
I actually think they needed to show a bit of the same political cynicism the tories have done over the last 50 years. Better late than never.

GailBlancheViola · 28/07/2023 21:20

I am just sick of men like Wes Streeting et al's high handed attitude to women and women's rights - the manner in which they defend the removal of women's rights in favour of males telling themselves that these males are the most oppressed, vulnerable people in the world ever, ever. Tell women what we are, what we should do, what we should say, what we should put up with, dismiss women's feelings, concerns, experiences, needs, wants and wishes. Rank misogynists the whole fucking lot of them, they just don't believe women are worth listening to let alone allow them to speak on issues that directly impact them.

JanesLittleGirl · 28/07/2023 21:22

Just to be clear, if I got a bit of Streeting on the sole of my shoe, I'd throw the pair away.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:22

They never expected to Johnson’s old seat. Not a cat in hells chance. Labour didn’t even win it under Blair. What lost them it was 800 votes that went to the Greens ironically. Probably most of them Corbyn supporters who hate Starmer. The thing the media ignored was the huge turnaround in Selby, now that was big.

I think they did. Hence all the infighting and scrambling post vote.

A minute ago they had ‘green’ in their tag line and now it’s hey Khan go away

Anyway whatever, if pp think it was expected they can rewrite that if it’s making it feel better 🤷‍♂️

Well said @GailBlancheViola

ArabeIIaScott · 28/07/2023 21:26

I'll be very interested to see the response from trans rights activists to this.

Genuine apologies and a set in stone statement that they will reverse the damage that is being done to women irrespective of what the male TRAs want.

They are not saying they will do anything to reverse the harms already perpetrated on women, they are still proud of the fucking GRA fgs and won't support strengthening the EqA, so yes it is a cynical ploy.

Charlotteowensdodgydad · 28/07/2023 21:28

@SunnyEgg and your opinion on Sunak being cynical ? Will wait with baited breath.

Whatever happened to Lily Madigan?

Sank into obscurity after a series of allegations about his conduct, specifically - unwanted sexual advances.
