Ulster unionists only party in NI to defend pro-woman position in debate

In discussion over whether men should play in women's rugby and the wider women vs trans rights question the UUP are the only party in NI with any grasp on reality. I can't believe I wrote that sentence. Excerpt but worth reading the whole thing:

"The panel also debated whether the UK should introduce a "self-ID" system to allow transgender people to change their legal sex without a medical diagnosis.
It followed the Labour Party dropping a pledge to introduce self-ID if they enter government, saying that medical diagnosis upholds "confidence in the system".
Ms Sheerin and Mr Tennyson said Sinn Féin and Alliance support a self-ID system. Mr de Faoite said the SDLP does not have an official policy but expressed support for the move.
Mr Beattie said the UUP has no policy, describing it as a "difficult and long conversation to be had".
He said there are "many females out there who are concerned about single-sex spaces... and we have to address that".
Mr Tennyson challenged the UUP leader, saying that self-ID "doesn't impact people's right to access single-sex spaces".
He added: "Political leadership is about bringing people with you, not just talking about LGBT rights when it seems fashionable or it might win votes.
"I think that's really important that we don't start to pinkwash our positions on these issues, and that we actually lead even when the debate is difficult."
Mr Beattie said: "Let's not say just because we have an issue with certain aspects here, that in any way whatsoever, that I don't treat everybody with respect."

An Alliance MLA urged Doug Beattie not to "pinkwash" by only backing LGBT issues when it is "fashionable or it might win votes"

Look forward to hearing him in Dáil Éireann.

seriously, he isn't the worst, in spite of/because of his bayonetting past.

I’m pretty sure that the DUP wouldn’t be in favour of Gender Identity Ideology or Self ID, and would probably not be equivocal in saying so. Unfortunately, a lot of DUP members would be coming at this topic from the same sort of position as people like Matt Walsh and Ben Shapiro (religious conservatives keen on traditional male & female roles).

I’m rolling my eyes so much at this nonsensical statement:

On Ulster Rugby, Mr Tennyson said: "I accept that trans participation in sport is a complex area. There are safeguarding issues which have to be considered.
"But other similar sports, like the GAA, have managed to put in place a framework which balances those competing considerations." He added: "A blanket ban doesn't respect the dignity of trans people in the way that a framework like the GAA has put in place does."

Women who play Gaelic football have been complaining about the new LGFA rules that allow males to self ID, nobody in the LGFA has been listening them or offering them a chance to put their arguments to decision makers.

LGFA is not GAA

I seem to recall Doug Beattie in the past being on board with the TRA mission.

Strange bedfellows all round. I'm always a bit wary of people with Repeal stickers in their profile. Though I had one myself in 2018. They tend to be the types who circulate petitions to cancel a person.

The new church of the poisoned mind.

I know that, I was attempting to point out that Tennyson was wrong in both ascribing the new self ID policies to the GAA (rather than LGFA) and in stating that self ID was generally accepted as a good idea for Gaelic sports.

I heard this morning that the politicians are going to try to accelerate three referendums at once this autumn - gender, women's right to a place in the home, another one. No clue as to the wording on any of it. I assume this is going to be an attempt to confuse us so that we vote the way they want. A bit of commentary from NI would be interesting.
