In discussion over whether men should play in women's rugby and the wider women vs trans rights question the UUP are the only party in NI with any grasp on reality. I can't believe I wrote that sentence. Excerpt but worth reading the whole thing:
"The panel also debated whether the UK should introduce a "self-ID" system to allow transgender people to change their legal sex without a medical diagnosis.
It followed the Labour Party dropping a pledge to introduce self-ID if they enter government, saying that medical diagnosis upholds "confidence in the system".
Ms Sheerin and Mr Tennyson said Sinn Féin and Alliance support a self-ID system. Mr de Faoite said the SDLP does not have an official policy but expressed support for the move.
Mr Beattie said the UUP has no policy, describing it as a "difficult and long conversation to be had".
He said there are "many females out there who are concerned about single-sex spaces... and we have to address that".
Mr Tennyson challenged the UUP leader, saying that self-ID "doesn't impact people's right to access single-sex spaces".
He added: "Political leadership is about bringing people with you, not just talking about LGBT rights when it seems fashionable or it might win votes.
"I think that's really important that we don't start to pinkwash our positions on these issues, and that we actually lead even when the debate is difficult."
Mr Beattie said: "Let's not say just because we have an issue with certain aspects here, that in any way whatsoever, that I don't treat everybody with respect."
