I've not yet read the whole thing but will. I thought there would already be a thread but couldn't see one.

I've had a quick read and it seems LGB rights are being attacked here.

The law marks a further rolling back of civil rights in Russia, following the passage of last year's anti-LGBT propaganda laws.s._
Under the legislation, any public expression or portrayal of LGBT culture was outlawed in public spaces. Individuals can be fined up to 400,000 roubles (£5,400) and organisations 5m roubles (£68,500) for "propagandising non-traditional sexual relations".*

It's regressive for LGB people. I agree that surgical procedures should not be carried out on children and on healthy adults either but to criminalise LGB people is wrong.

Sorry for not disse tong fully just yet but I will and know other far more knowledgable posters will be along to do a better job than I would.

Well, the trouble is that the harder you suppress stuff like that, the more it wants to push against the repression. A colourful LGBTect rainbow flag might end up being the symbol young Russians rally round to push against Mr P.'s inhumane regime. That would be rather ironic, right?

They've also banned sex reassignment surgery, I believe.

Sorry, I meant gender reassignment surgery! Posted while half watching something Blush

This isn’t surprising and just comes from a place of just hating people who are different. I wouldn’t want to be like TRAs who bring up Iran and its policy on sex reassignment surgery as something to celebrate.

The law last year obviously escaped my notice but I don't agree that LGB existence should be eradicated from books and films. I don't agree with the amount of LGBTQA++ education in schools here (and how the T is at the forefront of things) but to ban it completely is crazy and damaging. There has to be a happy medium surely? Everybody should have the same human rights and to deny that is appalling. With Russia or rather Putin doing what he's doing in Ukraine and now this, I can see that anyone agreeing with the banning of gender reassignment surgery will be thought in certain camps to be likened to Putin and his atrocities.
