I signed up for monthly text reminders from Coppafeel. They say they will remind me to check my chest.

Check your chest!

I just checked. I’m still breathing, so lungs seem to be working ok. Good to know🙄

Excuse Me What GIF

FrancescaContini · 12/07/2023 17:00

To check for signs of chest cancer, I presume?

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 12/07/2023 17:03

How on earth do you check your chest….surely that would require an xray

ridiculous 😳

Froodwithatowel · 12/07/2023 17:24

Yup, ribs all there thanks. Asthma managed.

Breasts now a dirty word is it? Gosh. How odd. Like 'woman'.

saraclara · 12/07/2023 17:30

My male (born so) friend is having treatment for breast cancer. It's not unusual in men.
So yes, get your male partners to check their chests, too.

dementedpixie · 12/07/2023 17:31

Men can check their breasts just like women can check their breasts.

Breast not Chest!!

Sunnyjac · 12/07/2023 17:33

@saraclara but you’ve just made the exact point that the OP was making!

“My male (born so) friend is having treatment for breast cancer. It's not unusual in men.

Helleofabore · 12/07/2023 17:48

Seems to be a failure of a communications campaign, I think. An absolute failure unless it is checking for chest issues and not breast issues.

PatatiPatatras · 12/07/2023 17:52

Just realising I had never associated my breasts to my chest before. Completely different body parts in my head...
I immediately thought of asthma, hay fever and coughs.

I know breast tissue extends under the armpits. Do we have to redefine chest to include back too just in case of missed checks?

dementedpixie · 12/07/2023 17:54

Would a chest issue not be more like breathing problems or heart issues whereas its the actual breast tissue that you need to examine for lumps relating to cancers. They are completely different areas so chest is the wrong word to use.

This only makes sense if you redefine the word "chest" to mean "breast". Which, apart from anything else, would be dangerously misleading.

Men get breast cancer and should check the tissue around their nipples - not their sternum, lungs etc.

IcakethereforeIam · 12/07/2023 18:42

I've been trying but my breasts are in the way!

Chersfrozenface · 12/07/2023 19:30

Oh dear, I can't buy a home spirometry test.

Should I be worried?

Fenlandia · 12/07/2023 22:47

Great point PatatiPatatras - 'chest' could be misleading as armpits and vicinity aren't really your chest, are they?

DdraigGoch · 12/07/2023 23:46

Well I've had a cough for a few weeks now that you mention it...

user123212 · 14/07/2023 10:23

imagine being at medical school and not knowing which bits the lecturer is trying to talk to you about

BabyStopCryin · 14/07/2023 10:36

I have an old linen chest. Should I be checking for woodworm?

IWillNoLie · 14/07/2023 11:02

Had my chest checked recently due to a persistent cough - chest x-ray and then had an endoscopy.

Sorry about your friend. Flowers

Is it a case of men can get breast cancer but women can only get chest cancer?

DryHeave · 14/07/2023 12:34

Per the NHS, breast cancer is rare in men. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/breast-cancer-in-men/

Men should check their breast tissue and nipples.

We will soon be messaging to younger generations who don't know what these organisations really mean.

Related tangent: I've always found the name CoppaFeel really creepy, as if lump checking needs to be done by a dirty old man in a mac. It actively puts me off doing something important for my own health. I assumed it was thought up by a man but I see it was two sisters - feels a bit "girls trying to be one of the lads" try-hard.

BabyStopCryin · 02/08/2023 11:42

I thought coppafeel was used to testicular cancer checks?

PriOn1 · 02/08/2023 11:59

If I were you, I’d tell them I can’t check my chest as I don’t have a stethoscope, so can they please send one.
