Does he not see his hypocrisy?

Of course he lives by his principles. Those principles earn him his living!

I'm not sure of your point?

JK Rowling is considerably richer and also funds causes and proects which are important to her.

Does he not see his hypocrisy?

Of course he does; it's a feature, not a bug. He could have chosen any other group but he knows this will rile feminists up and get him clicks.

He doesn't care whether the attention comes from love or hate, as long as people stay engaged he makes money.

It's the same reasoning used to paint women as nazis. That's why it is uncomfortable despite being something we'd initially all have agreed with.

The main difference being: the suffragettes were not prophesying a future devastating impact or a feeling of perceived injustice. They were protesting injustices actively happening to them. No feelings or future involved. JustStopOil and TRAs are definitely not doing that but the nuance is being air brushed away.

I don't like it. That was a feel good, almost the truth, sound bite. But it wasn't entirely the truth.

Well not just that but those women were also excluded from the suffrage - hence the very term for them! If you're not allowed to vote you can't use your vote to advocate for change, and your only remaining arena are the streets.

In contrast, JSO et al. aren't so much trying to use their own vote or even influence the way others vote - a lot of them have stated that they want to directly pressure government actors into policy changes.

Yes, the misogyny accusations sting him...and he always attempts a compensatory move in order to negate that.

Good I’ll keep making them then :)

Rudderneck · 10/07/2023 16:12

I think a huge differernce between the suffragettes and JSO is the former had a very specific policy they wanted to see enacted.

JSO doesn't, really, not one that is politically possible or meaningful.

How to get policies in place, on a worldwide scale, without crashing the global economy or fucking over large numbers of people, or fomenting a revolution. That's the problem, and they have no solutions.

Rudderneck · 10/07/2023 16:14

Which is a hair's breath away from the classic definition of terrorism. It's certainly anti-democratic. Exactly the way political pressure groups want to operate these days, though.

I detest LOJ's stance on the trans debate and women's rights but I think he has a point here and I agree with some of his other politics. It's a very confusing place to be for me but just because he's an odious little worm on women's rights does not mean everything he says deserves to be painted with the same shit brush.

exactly
the suffragettes were extremely disruptive and violent and very unpopular as a result- the entire movement for women's suffrage used a variety of methods including mass, peaceful protest
I don't think we've yet seen any climate activism that has approached what the suffragettes were driven to, although as a PP has said, they had no vote so limited options.
I actually think he's right that if we are fortunate enough to survive the climate crisis people will look back on ER and JSO much as we now look back on the suffragettes.
He's still wrong about women's rights of course but that's by the by

LOJ is the king of sixth form politics and thinking.

Why people pay to hear is inane views is a mystery to me.

He's very ranty isn't he.

The woman with the confetti wasn't actually from JSO

I think she was asked to do it in order to distract from the pre wedding email.

My objection to Talcum X using The Suffragettes in his argument, is his sheer hypocrisy. He is not a feminist!
