Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

@Froodwithatowel. I disagree. I get the argument. But I have a massive problem with people using real issues as a smoke screen for pearl clutching bigotry.

Both authors note that the ideal wouldn’t necessarily replicate the cishet “informational cascade”
Form the article as well. How can you not argue that the goal of this article and of the people mentioned in it, is to replace the 'cishet' usage of language? How else can you achieve their goal? If you do not replace the current sex based information regarding to pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding, the majority of information will always be aimed at female people with no regard to gender so will otherwise always be 'cishet'.

forkshoo · 08/07/2023 11:42

Because that won't happen. The vast majority of trans people don't want that to happen. It's a moot point.

WellThisIsFun1 · 08/07/2023 11:56

What is it?

Bullshit. That's what it is.

sanluca · 08/07/2023 11:57

forkshoo · 08/07/2023 11:42

It was happening, it is still happening in a lot of places. The only reason some organisations still hang on to the sex based wordings is because women protested.

I mean, you can stick your fingers in your ears and ignore it, and berate women who are fed up with it and express those feelings, but every time a main stream media has articles like these advocating for changing of language to appease a small group, it is another step towrds that middle of the unjust man.

Froodwithatowel · 08/07/2023 12:03

As above: it has happened, it is happening. It's about five years too late for this kind of wishful thinking.

And this has nothing to do with what most trans people want, it has to do with a powerful political lobby who are committed to imposing Critical Theory forcibly on society. This agenda comprises people with a range of agendas, but respect for others, inclusiveness, belief in the equality of women and the right of children to safeguarding is not part of any of them. It is also interesting to note that many, MANY of the most powerful and influential voices busy pushing this narrative are not themselves transgender. They will benefit in many other ways. Some deeply concerning ways if you are someone who believes in equality, social justice and the humanity of all people. Stuff like that.

forkshoo · 08/07/2023 12:06

@sanluca but that's not what the article is saying. It's saying there is lots of advice for pregnant women, but not a lot for trans men and it would be great if there was more support. I don't have a problem with that. Support for them isn't in place of support for others.

shebathequeenof · 08/07/2023 12:07

Absolutely revolting. A way of changing language so MAPS can claim sexual abuse is 'body feeding' like the men who put on women's clothes and put children on their nipples do.

Yeah, maybe about 2 years ago it was a threat. But not anymore. Now, the problem is people on the far right using real issues to women's rights as an excuse for bigoted views and opinions about the trans community.

I think what women here are trying to tell you but you are refusing to listen, is that it starts as support next to and then it morphs into support instead of.

Even the article implies it: they don't want to 'necessarily replace'. So the thought has already crossed their minds.

See - read this comment as an example of the point I'm making.

So we are on the far right again? Jeez, this is getting tedious

I'm not refusing to listen, I just don't agree.

FrancescaContini · 08/07/2023 12:15

Please explain how it’s “on the far right”, @forkshoo

Not the way I would have phrased it and probably not the intent of the people the article is about, but yes, when you change language so drastically that breastfeeding becomes generic body feeding, you have to be alert to what potential abuse gaps this then provides.
It is the same with the argument for lowering consent for medical pathways and 'knowing your own identity' as a child of 10. Those ideas can also be used for ideas you do not want to support.

You might not be, but it's classic behaviour of far right thinking to use the bad behaviour of a few to tarnish a whole group.
You're right, this is tedious. I have a kids birthday party to organise.
Peace out ✌️

Bollocks.

I'm not refusing to listen, I just don't agree.

You can have a different opinion but still acknowledge that someone else's ideas have merit and you have considered them. You don't seem to do that, but are slowly sliding into the accusations of bigotry, hate speech and far right.

So why do you feel body feeding is a correct term to use for breastfeeding and how should health organisations use this new term? Only on request? As a footnote? In special leaflets just for nb and transmen? But if only breastfeeding is used because that covers 99.99% of the audience, that is fine?

FrancescaContini · 08/07/2023 12:22

“It’s classic behaviour of far right thinking to use the bad behaviour of a few to tarnish a whole group” - what? Can you provide some examples through history, please, @forkshoo ?

applesandmares · 08/07/2023 12:23

Sorry since when do women not have chests? 😂 that's news to me. I'm breastfeeding but when I was pregnant a few people asked me if I would be 'feeding her with my body' which I thought was odd language but possibly makes more sense now if this is a new inclusive phrasing. Whilst I thought it was odd, I didn't find it offensive and obviously didn't think they were asking if I'd feed her with my ears or fingers.

turbonerd · 08/07/2023 12:24

Mel338a · 08/07/2023 08:22

Why do you think it was stopped? It wasnt stonewall who stopped the spread of chest feeding as a term for an age old act that hasn’t changed, it was women and men like those who use this board highlighting the catastrophic effects that changing language can have. Then another term starts to get changed and the fight to stop starts over again. It isn’t just as simple as they’ve stopped doing that now so no problem.

body feeding- when does that begin to include other fluids, everyone will say that’s not what will happen, but I’m cynical.

I thought this too …

You were asked if you’d be “feeding her with your body” when you were pregnant? Seriously?

turbonerd · 08/07/2023 12:26

So forkshoo thinks the changing of language doesn’t mean anything, but you are mean if you don’t change your language to appease a tiny tiny fraction of society.

Well, I will not do that.
Not racist, nazi or phobic in the least. But I like language to make sense and to reflect reality.

applesandmares · 08/07/2023 12:32

@FrancescaContini yes more than once! Not by any medical professionals though. Honestly until I saw this thread I thought it was because the people asking were a bit shy about referring to my breasts so used some clumsy phrasing.
