Helen Joyce & Peter Boghossian - Reality vs Trans Ideology

Helen Joyce in discussion with philosopher-skeptic Peter Boghossian on trans ideology:

Video description:

Helen Joyce is causing a lot of trouble. YouTube recently removed her conversation with Jordan Peterson (due to vague accusations of “hate speech” and “inciting violence”) and the BBC doesn’t invite her on air anymore. Among her heresies, she is guilty of believing there are two sexes and saying it out loud.

Helen, an Irish journalist, bestselling author, and director of advocacy at Sex Matters, spoke to Peter Boghossian about the differences between men and women. In many arenas, the differences don’t matter, but they are a matter of consequence regarding women’s privacy, vulnerability, and physical competition.

Peter and Helen discuss the definition of sex, why trans men should be allowed in women’s spaces, the tragedy of the commons, fa’afafine, evolution, the “thought-terminating cliché,” the tribal fear of rejection, the cultivation of mental illness, why institutions are losing their North Stars, and much more.

I get Tallisker’s point about his style, but he seemed genuinely rocked by a couple of Helen’s unequivocal statements. You can just tell she’s utterly done with pussyfooting around this topic. I get the impression we’ve cracked open the debate to a much greater extent in the UK.

Tallisker · 04/07/2023 22:28

Yes Betty I agree with that. I wonder if he doesn't come across such unequivocal bluntness across the pond. Yay Helen!

I can't be bothered to go back and check, but was the table between PB and Helen bigger than it was between PB and Andrew Doyle? I've only watched a few mins of the Andrew Doyle interview.

Tallisker · 04/07/2023 22:34

Nope I'm completely wrong about the table. Oops

flyingbuttress43 · 04/07/2023 22:41

Telling that Helen said she is never invited to go on mainstream TV like the BBC and ITV or Woman's Hour. So she has to use GB News and Talk TV. Just shows how captured our main media are.

dimorphism · 04/07/2023 23:11

Helen is just such a wonderfully sane voice of reason. I always feel better listening to her, it's such a relief.

Just in case she's reading this - there are thousands of women and men who agree with you Helen and are too scared to speak up!

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/07/2023 23:15

Only half-way through and I really, really have to go to bed. Dammit!

Boiledbeetle · 04/07/2023 23:23

Im just marking where I'm up to.

Im off bed now and I'm taking Peter and Helen with me! Make of that what you will!

Oh my goodness – unbelievably good. Clarifies so many issues.

For me, one of the richest points (I wish they'd spent longer on it) is that New Atheists spoke in absolute terms about science, reason and scepticism – but most of them swallowed gender ideology whole, despite it being unfalsifiable, irrational and entirely feelings-based. So maybe it never was reason-based at all. Need to reflect more on that one.

For me, their mistake was always to think that science, and empirical evidence, could itself be the foundation of something like certain knowledge.

It can't, and never could, be that. Any good philosopher of science knows that.

But believing it gave them a massive blind-spot.

I always found reading some of the skeptic evidence based stuff interesting because it was very evident in certain discussions. Home birth and midwifery being one example I remember vividly.

Boiledbeetle · 05/07/2023 01:08

I really enjoyed watching that. She's so this is what i think I'm going to say it in exactly the way i want to say it and i don't give a flying fuck if other people take issue with me.

I am in awe of the woman she's magnificent.

UtopiaPlanitia · 05/07/2023 01:38

I watched the entire video today, just in case youtube pulled it (like they did with Helen’s interview with Jordan Peterson).

I’ll watch ANY interview with Helen: she’s fascinating, intelligent, has a great way of explaining complex things, and you can tell she hates being lied to or being made to lie about the nature of reality.

I really admire her so much, especially for committing to the cause of women’s rights to the point of giving up her prestigious job at The Economist in order to become a full time advocate.

MavisMcMinty · 05/07/2023 02:27

Wow, that was superb! I was grinning and inwardly cheering throughout - she’s such an amazing role model, unafraid, well informed, articulate.

Boiledbeetle · 05/07/2023 02:40

I could honestly just have her sat in my house just talking at me all day! I wouldn't want to interrupt her when she's on a roll so i'd just let her keep going until she ran out of steam. Maybe fortify her with snacks and drinks and let her go on again for a few hours.

it would be wonderful!

MavisMcMinty · 05/07/2023 02:55

Yes, I’d written how I’d like to spend a night with her in the pub, then thought well that looks like I want to shag her and I don’t, so deleted it before posting.

SulisMinerva · 05/07/2023 09:00

This was an excellent conversation. It’s so good to hear Helen speak so clearly about the issues.

NotHavingIt · 05/07/2023 09:19

I think there's an element of disingenuousness with Peter Boghassian in this film. He's main shtick is to present himself as a detached, rational philosopher whose main interest is in rational argument - and he's greeat at that.

I suspect he doesn't want to be perceived as a full on gender critical person as this would damagae his brand as being a neutral observer.

thirdfiddle · 05/07/2023 09:27

I thought he was genuinely surprised at the clear cut line she was taking. I've seen him do the explain-to-me schtick with students and this was different. Though I suppose those videos he didn't actually have a person on the other end who was able to explain clearly and calmly and at length, so that may in itself change the act.

NotHavingIt · 05/07/2023 09:29

I wish Helen had let him expound more. I like his way of explaining things.

Woman2023 · 05/07/2023 09:31

It did make me think when she said few people would take her route of speaking out.

Personally, I have made my views clear to friends/family in conversation, on Facebook and 1 to 1 at work (turns out my boss watches Jordan Peterson). I've also written to organisations and councillors/MPs using my name. But I am a bit cautious at work, just to avoid trouble. But then we don't discuss politics at work generally and there's been no specific issue I need to raise.

Woman2023 · 05/07/2023 09:34

PB does use that specific line of questioning to get people's ideas and have discussions without falling out. He developed it after losing a good friend when he just argued.

I do like it as a method.

Yes, he manages to keep people on board by being amenable.

Helen is very clear, and in some ways she treated this as an interview rather than as a conversation, I feel.

fiftyandfat · 05/07/2023 09:39

Has you tube pulled the Jordan Peterson interview? I was planning to watch that. How annoying.

Matt Dillahunty is a perfect example of this. Can debate theism/atheism all day and come out on top of any theist but has completely fallen for the trans ideology. I do wonder if he’d feel differently if he wasn’t in a same sex relationship with Arden Hart, a fully intact transwoman who makes a living from porn videos on Onlyfans….. 🤔

That's as an ironic and rhetorical Q as I've seen.

What a disgrace. It was a brilliant interview
