Young V&A removes trans poster and LGBTQ+ books

The poster was produced by charity Stonewall and read: ‘Some people are trans, get over it!’. The books removed from the YVA bookshop - Seeing Gender and Here and Queer - are illustrated books, the first on expressing and understanding the complexities of gender and the second a guide aimed at girls to educate on aspects of queer life, such as coming out and Pride.

A spokesperson from the V&A told Arts Professional the museum “made the complex decision to remove several objects from this gallery – not just the Stonewall poster – as having reflected on the interpretation, the senior team felt more consultation was necessary with young people and teachers on how to present these topics, to ensure their perspectives were more fulsomely represented” .

A letter sent to PCS union members at the V&A says the decision to remove a poster advocating for trans rights and two illustrated books on queer identities was made by the museum’s director.

@IwantToRetire
Thank you - a close family friend died very suddenly (just before the anniversary of my own mother’s death) & it was all rather overwhelming. My next door neighbour was a former colleague of hers so we’ve been supporting each other.

I’m a wee bit staggered by the idea of Catholics being excused from lessons on Mary Tudor - admittedly, you might not want them pointing out that Edward VI was a bloodthirsty little creature &c. Thankfully teaching at my schools was pretty good, though it was a culture shock to move to secondary school & discover they didn’t do anything for Black History Month.

I know what you mean about the gaps & glossing-over. When I was very wee I found school massively confusing because “trying to be clever” was apparently naughty. I don’t know if you’ve seen the musical version of “Matilda”, but while I’d not the faintest about the speed of light, my instinctive question on learning the colours in Reception was basically hers about whether we all perceive colours the same way. Did not go down well. Childhood could be frantically frustrating with that sense adults were pushing away big questions/complex issues; but not being sure how to unravel them for yourself.

It seems trans activism and gender ideology pops up everywhere that children are. Hence the expression leave the kids alone. Let kids be kids

"It seems trans activism and gender ideology pops up everywhere that children are."

Horrific.
