A former Irish deputy prime minister has vowed to fight the country’s new hate speech laws, arguing that the legislation gives “no clarity” on its extended definitions of gender identities.

Senator Michael McDowell, who was tánaiste under Bertie Ahern, plans to propose amendments to the Criminal Justice (Incitement to Violence or Hatred and Hate Offences) Bill 2022, which has become a lightning rod in a transatlantic culture war.

Critics of the bill warn people campaigning against transgender women using female changing rooms could be jailed once the new legislation is in force.

Good on Michael McDowell!

Yeah, he's been a sane voice. A bit more timorous than usual, though.

Good to hear.

RTE's near-silence on this law, and the recent revelations are making me very aware of how it has ceased to be a serious news outlet. All advertorials, no genuine commentary.
