I hardly ever start posts here and yet here I am, 2 in less than an hour!

Cheltenham says no to Pride crossing... cos it' too expensive, and they had a lot of negative comments about the one in Gloucester.

A rainbow flag crossing

No rainbow crossing for Cheltenham amid cost and safety concerns

A councillor says he was told the crossings are costly and come with safety considerations.

Was there not a huge issue with police horses and guide dogs and 'Pride' crossings?

Here's some horses who weren't keen.

AmandaHoldensLips · 28/06/2023 15:47

They look bloody awful - there's one up the road from me and it looks really shabby after just 1 year. It's also difficult to see and is definitely a safety issue for partially-sighted people and support dogs.

I'm assuming they were sent to be re educated?

So, how will Pride people manage to cross the road without a rainbow?

By identifying as a lollipop lady 😳

MrsJamin · 28/06/2023 16:07

They've repainted the one in Reading this year, all our bloody Labour councillors are totally captured. It's virtue signalling at its worst. So many reasons not to paint it and they go ahead anyway when they've significantly put up council tax in a cost of living crisis. Idiots, the lot of them.

for cars to brake on it and not skid

I wonder how bikes fare? As a cyclist I'm always a bit nervous on line pain in the wet or winter, and I'd hate to go over a huge section of it like that.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/06/2023 16:36

Why did i picture you putting on a pair of raybans after you said that? Grin

All road marking material should pass the Skid Test. If I was still in the trade I'd potentially pop one one one of these crossings and see if it met the minimum requirements for the current day.

NHS hospital spent £11,801 on rainbow ramps at the entrances.

I'm sick of this expensive virtue signalling.

No different to a zebra crossing really. And any risk pales in comparison to the fucking great potholes everywhere. Our local roads look like the Battle of the Somme frankly.

nettie434 · 28/06/2023 22:47

I find the signals on The Strand quite confusing, especially because they include signals for cyclists as well as pedestrians. You don't get a lot of time to cross the road so there's no time to wonder if the lights are for cyclists or pedestrians.

Lightningstrikess · 28/06/2023 22:49

All these crossings were a no show in my area this year. Pride was very low key on the whole. June was distinctly less colourful!

WhereYouLeftIt · 29/06/2023 01:37

This is in my town, done in 2021. This photo from Google Streetmap was taken just months afterwards, and already it looked faded and grubby. It looked far tidier before.

And then there was the Pride Crossing

FrancescaContini · 29/06/2023 06:37

@WhereYouLeftIt ”Grubby” is very apt

Thosesummernights · 29/06/2023 06:51

Slightly OT but I suspect the real reason Cheltenham have said no is due to the appalling condition of the roads. Honestly, if they invested in a rainbow over fixing the many many huge potholes, I think there would be riots! 😆

Florissante · 29/06/2023 06:59

AlisonDonut · 28/06/2023 15:38

It isn't paint. It is thermoplastic. Which is plastic, with tiny spheres of reflective glass in it. It has to meet certain criteria for reflection and for cars to brake on it and not skid.

I used to test it for a living.

Thanks. That is helpful to know.

I find these lights very confusing. Even though the walk colour is still green my brain doesn’t seem to easily interpret the image as “walk”. I guess if I was using it all the time I’d get used to it but there will be so many tourists up there, and that roundabout is pretty dangerous, you’d think it would be extra important to make it clear when to cross.

SaysRelaaxxx · 29/06/2023 07:15

These crossings genuinely cheer me up when I see them and my kids love deciding which colour stripe they are going to cross the road on! If you can’t stand the queer community (as all of you clearly can’t), can you not just enjoy the happy colours? So much energy wasted on disliking a perfectly lovely inclusive thing when there is so much to actually dislike in the world.

musixa · 29/06/2023 07:18

Guide dogs are trained to recognise black and white ones; and black and white is easier for visually impaired people to recognise. I don't think we should be, potentially literally, throwing these people under a bus.

So much energy wasted on wanting to make life difficult for visually impaired people and guide dogs. But you do you.

And also difficult for people with cognitive impairments.

Inclusion for some but not others.
