Private Member's Bill - No secret resources in RSE (sex ed.) lessons

"Miriam Cates will today introduce a 'sex education transparency' Private Members' Bill to create a legal duty for English schools to share RSE materials with parents, and prevent schools from using unpublished materials produced by a third-party provider."

I think if you saw the thread about the mum fighting for (and losing) the right to see the resources used in her child's sex education lessons but clearly this has been a lot of parents (and teachers) thinking it shouldn't work like that.

I should think so. Who would want children’s lessons to be ‘our little secret’? How dare external suppliers, aided by staff with dubious intentions, have carte blanche over what they ‘teach’ our children.

What’s one of the first things you teach your children ‘if a grown up tells you to keep a secret…’

Excellent.

Here in Scotland parents can access, read and feedback on all materials for RSHP resources. https://rshp.scot/

The situation in England/Wales seems outrageous.

I can't actually see a way anyone can argue against this.

Good.

I was so pissed off that that judge said it wasn’t enough in the public interest.

I wonder how well this works in practice given the legislation that almost got passed in Scotland about kids self-id-ing as trans at 16?
My DC left Scottish schools several years ago and I never thought to ask to see the material at the time but they definitely both became aware of 'trans' as a concept before I did.
I am guessing in England this issue has come about as local councils no longer have oversight over a lot of Education and the Academy model means the 'providers' decide the curriculum and as we know Stonewall and others extended their tentacles far and wide.

@ArabeIIaScott Yeah I could see a filibuster potentially from a true believer, or trying to add amendments, but yeah I can't see that they'll be many mps that want to vote against this.

As has been pointed out here extensively sunlight is the best disinfectant. If what you're teaching is reasonable, fair, accurate and defensible there is no reason for it to be secret.

There are lots of problems with the curriculum, but at very least we can see them as they arise and feedback on them. There's nothing that's kept secret from parents.

It seems like two different issues to me. Yes, the content needs to be correct and factual, but the first issue in E&W is establishing that parents actually need to know what's being taught!
